Tinum, A 3 km de Tinum rumbo a San Francisco, 23 m, Ucan 2303 (CICY).<br />

Cultivated material. cultivated at Duke University 1989-1992 from a cutting<br />

collected in 1989 by Sr. Dzib and E. Leiter at Chichén Itzá, MacDougal 4633<br />

(MO).<br />

Notes<br />

In 1992, MacDougal noticed marked variation in reproductive and vegetative<br />

characters among the herbarium specimens circulated as P. coriacea from<br />

Belize, Guatemala, and the Yucatán Peninsula <strong>of</strong> México and described P.<br />

xiikzodz. He found the floral corona <strong>of</strong> this new species to be fundamentally<br />

different from P. coriacea and the other members <strong>of</strong> supersection Cieca, as it is<br />

5-7-seriate as opposed to 2-seriate. He noticed the absence <strong>of</strong> the floral nectary<br />

and the very reduced, denticulate operculum <strong>of</strong> this species. The seeds are also<br />

longer than all <strong>of</strong> the other species in the supersection. The petiolar nectaries<br />

are positioned on the distal third <strong>of</strong> the petiole in P. xiikzodz and the floral stipe is<br />

diagnostically long. These floral and vegetative characters clearly separate this
