total sugar concentration measured as sucrose equivalents in percent weight per<br />

total weight to be 35-38% in P. juliana, which is within the range typical for<br />

utilization by bees. MacDougal also found that lacebugs and the butterfly<br />

Heliconius charitonius are important herbivores.<br />

McCormick chromatographically screened leaf samples <strong>of</strong> P. juliana for<br />

flavonoids and found detectable levels <strong>of</strong> flavonol 3-O-glycosides but not C-<br />

glycosylflavones (McCormick, 1982).
