18 Exhaust manifold -<br />

removal <strong>and</strong> refitting 3<br />

Removal<br />

1 Disconnect the battery negative lead. Firmly<br />

apply the h<strong>and</strong>brake then jack up the front of<br />

the vehicle <strong>and</strong> support it on axle st<strong>and</strong>s.<br />

2 Remove the air cleaner metal intake duct.<br />

Undo the two bolts securing the duct<br />

mounting bracket to the cylinder head cover<br />

<strong>and</strong> remove the bracket.<br />

3 Undo the two bolts securing the upper<br />

radiator mountings to the bonnet platform,<br />

then remove the mountings <strong>and</strong> tilt the<br />

radiator forward to gain the clearance<br />

necessary to remove the manifold.<br />

4 Unscrew the nuts securing the exhaust<br />

front pipe to the manifold, then disconnect the<br />

pipe <strong>and</strong> collect the gasket.<br />

5 Undo the five nuts securing the exhaust<br />

manifold to the cylinder head, then carefully<br />

manoeuvre the manifold out of the engine<br />

compartment. Remove the manifold gasket<br />

<strong>and</strong> discard it.<br />

6 Examine all the exhaust manifold studs for<br />

signs of damage <strong>and</strong> corrosion. Remove all<br />

traces of corrosion <strong>and</strong> repair or renew any<br />

damaged studs.<br />

18.7 Exhaust manifold tightening sequence - K16 engine<br />

Refitting<br />

7 Refitting is the reverse of the removal<br />

procedure,<br />

illustration):<br />

noting the following (see<br />

a) Ensure that the manifold <strong>and</strong> cylinder<br />

head sealing faces are clean <strong>and</strong> flat, then<br />

fit a new manifold gasket.<br />

b) Working in the sequence shown, tighten<br />

the manifold retaining nuts evenly to the<br />

specified torque wrench setting.<br />

c) Tighten all other disturbed nuts <strong>and</strong> bolts<br />

to their specified torque wrench settings<br />

(where given).<br />

19 Exhaust system - inspection,<br />

removal <strong>and</strong> refitting<br />

1 Refer to Section 18 in Part A of this<br />

Chapter. Note that on models fitted with a<br />

closed-loop catalytic converter, the lambda<br />

sensor must be removed or its wiring<br />

disconnected whenever the exhaust<br />

system front pipe is disconnected from the<br />

manifold.<br />
