18.13 Tailpipe-to-intermediate flange<br />

Tailpipe<br />

13 Remove the two nuts securing the tailpipe<br />

flange joint to the intermediate pipe <strong>and</strong><br />

separate the joint (see illustration).<br />

14 Unhook the tailpipe from its three mounting<br />

rubbers <strong>and</strong> remove it from the vehicle.<br />

15 If the threads of the intermediate pipe to<br />

tailpipe studs are damaged, or the studs snap<br />

when the nuts are being undone, the studs<br />

can be knocked out of position <strong>and</strong> replaced<br />

with bolts.<br />

Refitting<br />

16 Each section is refitted by a reverse of the<br />

removal sequence, noting the following:<br />

1689 <strong>Rover</strong> <strong>214</strong> & <strong>414</strong> Updated Version 09/97<br />

a) Ensure that all traces of corrosion have<br />

been removed from the flanges.<br />

b) Renew all necessary gaskets.<br />

c) Inspect all rubber mountings for signs of<br />

damage or deterioration <strong>and</strong> renew as<br />

necessary.<br />

d) Tighten all flange nuts by h<strong>and</strong> only<br />

to locate the disturbed section in<br />

position, then ensure all exhaust<br />

system rubber mountings are correctly<br />

seated.<br />

e) Check that there is adequate clearance<br />

between the exhaust system <strong>and</strong> vehicle<br />

underbody before tightening all flange<br />

nuts to the specified torque.
