Aunque las metodologías de muestreo influyen también es obvio que la autoidentificación cada vez va generando un menor sentido de pertenencia cultural. Uno de los motivos es la falta de oportunidades, vinculada al prejuicio del indígena en los ámbitos laborales como un individuo útil únicamente para ciertos trabajos de poca remuneración y escasa preparación técnica o académica. Es por ello que en el mundo indígena, en las comunidades, es donde más se puede evidenciar la dureza del fenómeno migratorio. También otros problemas como el alto índice de alcoholismo, la deserción escolar, la violencia intrafamiliar, parecen tener una especial repercusión dentro de algunas comunidades. Lo cual, lamentablemente, alimenta a su vez la barrera que impide el entendimiento pleno y la interculturalidad entre el mundo indígena y el mundo “mestizo”. Parecería que el único espacio dentro del imaginario nacional en el que el indígena tiene cabida sin mayores problemas es en el turístico.
