Numerosos estudios han mostrado la importancia de los sistemas agroforestales cafetaleros para la biodiversidadde avifauna. Sin embargo, se ha generado poco conocimiento para entender cómo la complejidad estructural y el contextopaisajístico de estos sistemas afectan la diversidad y la composición de aves. Este estudio exploró las relaciones entre lacomplejidad estructural, el contexto paisajístico (cobertura de bosque aledaño) y las comunidades de aves presentes en estossistemas en el Corredor Biológico Volcánica Central-Talamanca (CBVCT), Costa Rica. Se examinaron las característicasestructurales, florísticas y de manejo de 20 cafetales con sombra de Erythrina poeppigiana (CE) y 20 con sombra de E.poeppigiana y Cordia alliodora (CEC). Se calculó el porcentaje de cobertura de bosque alrededor de cada finca a radios dedistancia de 500 m, 1000 m y 1500 m para examinar el efecto del contexto de paisaje. Se realizaron muestreos de avesen las 40 fincas cafetaleras y cinco bosques, utilizando puntos de conteo. Se registraron 1687 individuos (101 especies deaves) en los cafetales, la mayoría fueron generalistas. En total, 1064 individuos (85 especies) fueron registrados en cafetalesCEC y 623 individuos (56 especies) fueron registradas en cafetales CE, indicando una mayor riqueza, mayor abundanciay mayor diversidad de aves en cafetales con una mayor complejidad estructural por la presencia de especies maderablescomo C. alliodora, epífitas y un dosel alto. La cobertura de bosque aledaño a los cafetales tuvo un efecto negativo en laabundancia, riqueza y diversidad de aves generalistas, pero fue positivo en aves especialistas, lo cual indica que los sistemasagroforestales cafetaleros con mayor complejidad estructural y alta cobertura de bosque pueden albergar algunas especiesde alto valor para la conservación. Incrementar la complejidad estructural de los sistemas agroforestales y la cobertura debosque aledaño puede favorecer la conservación de la avifauna en paisajes antropogénicos.Palabras clave: biodiversidad, cobertura de bosque, conectividad, Coffea arabica, Cordia alliodora, Erythrina poeppigiana,fragmentación, paisajismo.Ab s t r a c t. Numerous studies have shown the importance of coffee agroforestry systems for avifauna biodiversity.However, there is still little known on how the structural complexity of coffee agroforestry systems and landscape contextaffect composition in these systems. This study explored the relationships between structural complexity, landscapecontext (surrounding forest cover), and bird communities present in these systems within the Volcánica Central-TalamancaBiological Corridor (CBVCT), Costa Rica. We examined the structural, floristic and management characteristics of 20shade coffee farms with Erythrina poeppigiana (CE) and 20 shade coffee farms with E. poeppigiana and Cordia alliodora (CEC).The percentage of forest cover around each farm was calculated at distance radius of 500 m, 1000 m and 1500 m in orderto examine the effect of landscape context. Birds were sampled in the 40 coffee farms and five forests by using pointcounts. A total of 1687 individuals (101 species of birds) were observed in coffee farms, the majority of which weregeneralist species.
