Russian loan words in the Mordvin language (Part I)
The present paper studies words from V. I. Versinin’s Mordvin etymologic
dictionary that are considered to be Russian origin. Some of these items
are very rare and have not been examined up until now.
The discussion begins with the glossary – words with A–O initials in the
first part. The second part of the paper first completes the glossary (P–Ž),
and then looks into the most important issues of Mordvin–Russian linguistic
relations. These include the historic and disciplinary context, clues for the
adaptations, phonetic, phonologic and morphologic characteristics of the
loans, grammatical class relations and a semantic (conceptual) classification.
The monographic elaboration of Russian loans in the Mordvin language is
a task to be carried out by a bilingual (Mordvin- and Russian-speaking)
Erzya or Moksha researcher.
