Vision Meets Industry Session 5 HOME CityCube Berlin 8 Sept. 2015 1:45-3:15 pm The Home as a Centre for Healthcare IFA+ Summit has a new take on how the home fits into the healthcare equation London’s Imperial College is one of the world's leading science, technology and medicine universities. Chair in Technology and Innovation Management – Healthcare at the college, Professor James Barlow, works closely with industry and government in the UK and elsewhere on the way new technologies are changing health services. As a key speaker at this year’s summit, we asked him to tell us a little more about his work. I’m interested in what can be done to ensure technologies are adopted and embedded into the health system. One of the key areas I have worked on over the past 15 years is telehealth, the delivery of health care to people in their homes or on a mobile basis using ICT. In the developed world, the problem today is how to cope with rising demand – due to an ageing population and also the improvement in diagnostics and treatment, which allows us to do more medicine – at a time when resources are increasingly constrained. Technology can help, and the health technology industry is hugely innovative, but it suffers from problems in getting its new products taken up widely. What will your presentation cover? I am going to focus on how, for the past 20 years or more, commentators have heralded the growing importance of our homes as a location for healthcare. But while this has been accepted as a concept, getting over the tipping point from relatively smallscale trials has proven hard. Today, a range of consumerfocused telehealth products is beginning to disrupt the notion of telehealth but are we now at a tipping point (again) or will it be another case of déjà vu? The “catch phrase” of the summit is “next level of thinking”. How important is it for people to project onto a different plane in this respect and look at things in a different way? I think it is very important to break out of old ways of thinking if we are to make full use of all the benefits that technological innovation potentially offers. We mustn’t get locked into received wisdom about how to deliver healthcare for example. All sorts of new possibilities are emerging with the growth of consumer health products. Professor James Barlow Chair in Technology and Innovation Management – Healthcare at London Imperial College That’s Entertainment Where innovation, flexibility and crossing borders have become leading assets Session 6 ENTERTAINMENT CityCube Berlin 8 Sept. 2015 3:30-4:50 pm Matthijs Wouter Knol Director of the European Film Market The IFA+ Summit’s “Entertainment” session looks at how media production is being revolutionised through digitisation. A key figure, Matthijs Wouter Knol - Director of the European Film Market, says his industry is facing some big challenges at the moment… The media industry is changing rapidly as the behaviour of consumers is changing in high speed. To offer our visitors a platform to learn about new trends, market players or business models, figure out how they can adapt to them and keep their business going is a goal we’re setting every year again. Please tell us a little about your organization and your own role on a daily basis. The European Film Market (EFM) is the business platform of the Berlin International Film Festival where buyers, sales agents, distributors, producers, exhibitors and financiers meet, network and do business. The EFM ranks among the 3 major film markets in the world, together with the markets in Cannes and Los Angeles. Since 2014, I’m heading a team that is turning the EFM into one of the world’s most modern markets for film and audiovisual content. The ‘catch phrase’ of the summit is Next level of thinking. How important is it for people to project onto a different plane in this respect and look at things in a different way? Thinking is one of the most underrated things in a world in which all answers seem to be available with one click. Challenging Thinking is one of the most underrated things in a world in which all answers seem to be available with one click one’s mind, gathering knowledge, approaching topics in a new and out-of-the-box way and trying to push things further is essential to find the right answers for ourselves. I think the summit connects very well to what we are doing: when people get together at a huge event like IFA, offering them a space to share ideas intrinsically adds to the quality of the event. www.ifa-international.org IFA International • Tuesday 8 th September 2015 11
