PRODUCT TRENDS To listen

PRODUCT TRENDS To listen to music on my ZEN I recommend the world’s smallest and lightest in-ear earphone, the ‘Image’ from Klipsch. They use ‘Contour Ear Gels,’ which are In-ear earphone - Klipsch anatomically designed to accurately fit inside the human ear canal. They help reduce ear fatigue and make a seal for excellent noise isolation and increased bass response. I love my radio and at IFA there is a mind-boggling array of sets from the future modern to the retro kitsch. The Tivoli Audio Music System incorporates one Tivoli Audio Music System of the finest tuners available at any price. The Music System delivers full and expansive stereo sound – including a SpacePhase wide mode – from two integrated speakers and a downfiring, magnetically shielded, powered subwoofer. Reciva from Cambridge in the UK are displaying their latest range of mobile Internet radios. Without even having to turn your computer on, the portable Reciva sets log into your wireless connection to stream your favourite stations around the house. It is great for listening to my favourite rock stations like the old pirate Radio Caroline now on-line, or my local station Riviera Radio when I am away from home. A new generation of digital radio was also announced at IFA with Digital Radio Mondiale Plus (DRM+). Like DAB, DRM is a digital radio format but whilst DAB like FM stays local, DRM+ can deliver digital quality signals on the old AM bands (Long, Medium and Short Wave) and therefore DRM+ stations can be heard over hundreds of miles away. At IFA hybrid DAB and DRM+ sets are on display from Bosch/Blaupunkt, Himalaya and TechniSat. 50 years after the launch of the first ever car radio at IFA, Starwaves have launched a DAB/DRM car model this year and Russia’s first prototype DRM set from Sarapulsky is also on show. And what about that collection of thousands of compressed MP3s that you have? Well JVC have launched the UX-DM8 and UX-DM9DB microcomponent systems at IFA. As well as serving as a hub to JVC UX-DM8 organise all your music files from external sources their amazing K2 technology actually upgrades and restores the quality of your MP3, WMA and WAV files. So that’s the future, what about the retro-kitsch? Well it has to be made in China and Timsen International produce a series of real wooden cabinet music centres but with the latest digital technology packed into the same box as a cassette player and a turntable. Remember vinyl?! 18 IFA International • Tuesday, 4 th September 2007
