Fossiliferous sites at the Ibirá’s municipality region, SP (Bauru Basin,
Adamantina Formation, Upper Cretaceous): Paleovertebrate fossils
and paleoecological inferences
Aline M. Ghilardi 1 & Marcelo A. Fernandes 1
The region of Ibirá municipality (São Paulo State), placed in the Adamantina Formation
context of the Bauru Basin, has already been recognized in literature as containing
promising sites for vertebrate fossils. The significance of the fossil content proceeding
from this region may lay on the additional information that it can brings to the studies of
the composition, geographical distribution and evolution of the Bauru Basin fauna. Two
fossiliferous sites of Ibirá region were considered in this study regarding its geological
setting and its vertebrate assembly. The main objective was to evaluate the importance of
these sites and its fossil material to the studies of the Bauru Basin fauna. Taxa of different
vertebrate groups could be identified during the study, which include sauropod and
theropod dinosaurs, crocodyliforms, testudines, amphibians and fishes. Despite its
fragmentary character, the fossil material from both sites has proven to be relevant to the
studies of the basin, since reports of at least one taxa which has not been previously
reported for the basin context were found. The sites were considered relatively important
to the understanding of the basin not only because of that, but also because they
represent two distinct depositional contexts and, moreover, because one of them shows
significant degree of microfossil‟s preservation - what can drive future efforts in search of
additional microvertebrates remains. Finally, in the last part of this study were attempted
some preliminary paleoecological inferences on the fauna. The intent was to stimulate
further discussions. Typical paleovertebrate groups of the unit were considered - not only
the ones reported here - and then their potential interactions and its likely relations with
the environment were briefly discussed. As one may see, sauropods may have played an
important hole in this ecosystem.
