The Laboratory of Paleontology of UFS as non-formal education space:
A brief discussion about the heritage value of the fossils of Sergipe

The non-formal education, promoted by research institutions and universities, represents
an important means to disseminate Paleontology knowledge. The exhibition of fossils in
extra-school institutions includes resources for dissemination of fundamental knowledge
for students of basic education. Along with the study of Paleontology, a way of
highlighting the heritage value of the fossils is considered, because they don‟t have only
scientific value, but also a socio-cultural one. This study aimed to evaluate the contribution
of the Laboratory of Paleontology of the Federal University of Sergipe as a disseminator of
paleontology knowledge to students from the 7th year (6th grade) of public municipal
schools of Aracaju. For this, access to the collection of fossils was provided to students
through visits to the exhibition, and the importance of preserving the fossil heritage was
explained. For data collection, 164 texts were analyzed, which included subjective
assessments of students about the whole process of visitation. Interviews applied to the
teachers responsible for each class were transcribed and analyzed, allowing the process to
see how visits contributed to the discussion on Heritage Education and fossils. Through
qualitative analysis of texts and interviews, it suggests that the exposure of the Laboratory
of Paleontology of the UFS as an area of non-formal education is able to promote a
satisfactory paleontological dissemination of knowledge to the student community,
allowing students to learn, in a stimulating and interactive way, knowledge about the
fossils. The emphasis on the heritage value of the fossils allowed the teachers to
understand the importance of Heritage Education as teaching-learning process that helps
to highlight the importance of preservation of fossils in the maintenance and greater
dissemination of the study of Paleontology.
