The paleontology’s teaching in museology’s course at the Universidade
Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO)

This work is concerned with the inclusion of the disciplines of Paleontology and Geology in
the undergraduate courses of Museology in Brazil and it discusses about the inclusion of
“Fundamentos de Geologia e Paleontologia” (Foundations of Geology and Paleontology) as
a compulsory discipline in the undergraduate course of Museology at the Universidade
Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO). Paleontology e Geology first appeared in
the curriculum of Museology courses by the end of the 1960‟s in the Museu Histórico
Nacional museum technician course. In the 1990‟s these disciplines became optional. In
2008, they regained their compulsory status with the implementation and inclusion of a
new discipline: “Foundations of Geology and Paleontology”, which is part of a series of
strategic educational experiments. Those experiments aim at connecting the discipline
with the students‟ reality and experience, which are sometimes permeated by resistance
to hard scientific disciplines.
