MARTIN MEINANDER, CONIOPTERYGIDAE (NEUROPTERA) FROM MOROCCO i 01
I was not able to distinguish the spiracle of the eighth segment. The ninth
tergite is narrow, and the posterior and ventral part is sclerotized. The ectoprocts
(epr) are weak and bear long stiff hairs. The subanal (sap) is weak and
hairless.
The length of fore-wings 2.43—2.66 mm, $?: 2.49—2.69 mm, of the
hind-wings 2.00—2.25 mm. $?: 2.00—2.29 mm. The antennae are 27- to
29-segmented.
Ecology: The Moroccan specimens were captured in the woods of the Atlas
mountains on Pinus sp., Pofulus alba and Pistacia atlantica.
Morocco: Moyen Atlas, El-Ksiba 14. 3. 1961. 1 1 $ leg. Meinander on
Pistacia: Haut Atlas, Asni lO.-ll. 3. 1961. 1 ^ leg. Meinander on Populus, 2
on Pimis and 1 c?, 2 $$ leg. Meinander without ecological notes.
Distribution: The species was known from Haute-Loire, Tence, in France
and Steyr in Austria.
Coniopteryx aegyptiaca Withycombe 1924 (figs. 9—13)
Withycombe, 1924. Bull. Soc. Roy. Knt. d'Egypte 16:146—151. Esben-
Petersen, 1928. Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist. Ser. 10, Vol. 1:450.
The Moroccan specimens are paler than the type specimens from Egypt,
but since the male genitalia agree very well with the figure of thé description
I hope I am right in identifying the specimens with the Egyptian species.
According to WITHYCOMBE'S description, entire body is dark brown in dry
specimens. The thorax of the Moroccan specimens is yellowish brown with
one large dark spot on each side of the meso- and inetathorax. The head is
concolorous with dark eyes, mandibles and antennae. The abdomen is wholly
pink except for the genital segments.
The wings (fig. 9) agree with the WITHYCOMBE'S figures, except that the
Moroccan specimens have a cross-vein in the hind-wings between R4+6 and
M which is not drawn in WITHYCOMBE'S figure. The membrane of the forewing
is tinged with fuscous.
The figure of the male genitalia in the description of the Egyptian specimens
is rather indistinct so I refigure them here (figs. 11—12). The apices of the
entoprocessus (epr) are fused to a bridge below the aedeagus, which shows that
the species is nearly related to C. bicuspis Tjeder (S. Africa), C. stuckenbergi
Tjeder (S. Africa). C. pentbertoni Kimmins. (Hawaii), C. litoralis n. sp. and
C. atlasensis n. sp.
The female genitalia (fig. 10) were hitherto underscribed. The abdomen is
wholly pink, except for the 8th sternite, which is strongly sclerotized and brown.
The 8th tergite is narrow and weak. The hind margin of the 9th tergite is
strongly sclerotized, and the sclerotized parts makes a semicircular dorsal
arrow from beneath one gonapophyses laterales (gl) to beneath the other. The
