Coniopteryx type. The cross-vein-like portion of Scj and the cross-vein between
Ri and R2+3 are gradate in both wings. There is no cross-vein between Ri+s
and M in the hind-wing. Length of fore-wing 1.8—2.1 mm, of hind wing 1.4—
1.7 mm.
The abdomen is pink except for the male genital segments, which are brown.
Male genitalia (figs. 21—22): The hypandrium (hy) is very narrow. There is
no processus latérales or terminales. The gonarcus (gs) is divided into two acutely
ending lateral plates with a ventral apodeme. The'entoprocessus (ent) is
very slender and long and proceeds from the ventral border of the gonarcus.
The apices of the entoprocessi are fuses into a ridge below the aedeagus, forming
a support bridge for the eadeagus. This character shows that C. atlasensis
belongs to the same species group as C. aegyptiaca Withycombe and C. litoralis
n. sp. The gonarci are fused to the entoprocts (epr).which are weak and
unsclerotized. The paramers (pa) are slender, and each has a tooth which is
directed inwards. The parameres are connected by a small ventral tooth to the
entoprocessus. The penis (p) is below the parameres. The male genitalia closely
resemble those of C. stuckenhergi Tjeder and C. litoralis n. sp. but are distinctly
separated from both species by the very narrow hypandrium and lack of a
processus latérales. From C. aegyptiaca Withycombe the species is separated
by the lack of terminal incision on the hypandrium. The parameres of the
species are also distinct.
Female genitalia (fig. 24—25): The eighth segment of the female seems
synscleritous. The sternite projects backwards and bears some hairs. The ninth
tergite is narrow and dark-pigmented ventrally. The ectoprocts (epr) are weak
and unpigmented and bears some hairs. The subanale (sap) is also unpigmented.
The gonapophyses latérales (gl) are dark pigmented and fused to a band-like
plate as in C. litoralis n. sp.
The North African species of this species group are very closely allied. They
are all very small. The length of the fore-wing is 1.8—2.7 mm and the mesoand
metathorax of all species are pale except for a dark spot on each side.
C. litoralis is separated from the other species of the group by its distinctly
darker wings. The other two species are to be distinguished by the characteristics
of the genitalia.
