Further Notes on the Trichopterous Fauna of Madeira
With 6 figures
O. N V b o m
The indefatigable Prof. HÅKAN LINDBERG has again, in the years 1957 and
1959, made entomological expeditions to Madeira and his collection includes
several Trichoptera, totalling 9 species. Owing to the rather numerous investigations
of the Madeiran entomological fauna lately, its composition, also in
respect of the Trichoptera, seems to be rather well known. Thus the present
material shows little new to add to it.
However, the discovery of more brachypterous specimens of Mesophylax
ohlittis Hag. in addition to the single one found by I^UNDBLAD, and especially
of the female of the species, is of great interest. It is evident that the present
form constitutes a race and not merely an occasional abnormality. According
to MOSKI.Y the holotype seems to have been lost, the allotype however being
preserved in the British Museum. For some reason SCHMID has not come across
the latter for his Mesophylax monograph ("la Ç n'est connu que par les
descriptions de Hagen et Mclyachlan"). Thus I think it justified to give figures
of the genitalia here.
Some specimens of Tinodes in the present material are considerably larger
than the others, which belong to the species cinerea Hag. and as there are small
differences in the male genitalia, they seem to represent the other Madeiran
Tinodes species, viz. grisea Hag., said to be larger than cinerea and hitherto
known in the female sex only.
I am very grateful to Mr. KIMMINS of the British Museum for sending me
sketches of the female genitalia of Mesophylax oblitus Hag.
