valves form a short, dark structure (fig. 6, vv). The lateral valves are broad
and somewhat upwards bent at apex (fig. 5, Iv). The vaginal apodeme is a
large structure of the shape shown in figs. 7 and 8, va. There are two spermathecae
as illustrated in fig. 7, spm. Each spermathecal duct ends in a collarlike
structure, embracing the base of a quite unpigmented and very weak,
elongate sperniatheca.
In addition to areolata (Lundstr.) only three species of the subgenus Platytoma
are known from Ivurope: cinerascens (Meig.) (= nubila Schumm.),
affinis (JUacksch.) and neglecta (Lacksch.). The two last-mentioned species are
known only from Courland; cinerascens is very wide-spread. The males are
