‘Each year, 500,000
guests come to
Zugspitze with all kinds
of different ideas.’
(Klaus Schanda)
‘Many of our guests
check out the webcams
before breakfast at
their hotel and then
they use this information
to decide where to
go for their day trip.’
(Klaus Schanda)
‘Right now our guests’
desire to reach the
mountains fast and
safely makes us think
about rebuilding the
Eibsee cable car.’
(Klaus Schanda)
‘As a modern service
provider it is always our
goal to authentically
combine tradition and
modernity.’
(Klaus Schanda)
48
with our guests’ needs. That’s somewhat conservative, responsible
and offers everyone the freedom to do themselves good.
L.L. ⁄ And finally: Garmisch-Partenkrichen is a member of ‘Best of the
Alps’. Your favorite place in the Alps?
P.N. ⁄ Garmisch and Partenkirchen, ‘because it’s home!’.
L.L. ⁄ And now on to you, Mr. Schanda: What makes the mountain
railways & cable cars around Garmisch-Partenkirchen and
Grainau so special?
K.S. ⁄ What’s special about the mountains railways is that our offer
is not limited to winter and the skiing areas, we actually present
ourselves as an attractive all-year-round destination to our guests,
where we offer something for every taste and demand. Which means
that ambitioned mountaineers and international tourists as well as
families with children or seniors find what’s perfect for them.
L.L. ⁄ Garmisch-Partenkirchen is Germany’s number 1 winter sports destination.
Who’s your biggest competitor in the fight for the guests’ favor?
K.S. ⁄ Well basically our competitors are skiing resorts that can
compete when it comes to proximity and connection to the capital
Munich, i.e. mostly the skiing resorts close to Salzburg by the motorway
A8. When it comes to skiing resorts in our direct proximity we
increasingly support cooperation. The best example for this would
be the popular Top Snow Card, a card that offers our guests 216
kilometers of pistes and 84 lifts in Germany and Austria!
L.L. ⁄ Zugspitzbahn fulfills a ‚historical task‘, so to say, i.e. making
the summit reachable for every citizen. Does this mean that on the
mountain we are all equal?
K.S. ⁄ Our 500,000 guests come to Zugspitze with all kinds of different
ideas. While mountaineers from all over the world want to
climb Zugspitze and cross ‘Jubiläumsgrat’ (Jubilee Arête), many
European, American and Asian tourists come here to see Germany’s
highest mountain and enjoy the fantastic view of 4 countries from
‘Germany’s roof ’. Some of our Arabic guests visit Zugspitze to see
snow for the first time in their lives. All these different desires and
needs are what we – with our mountain railways’ comprehensive
year-round range of offers – are trying to fulfill.
