British army in 1880 in Afghanistan and who was awarded the title
‘Earl of Kandahar’. The first Kandahar race took place in 1928 in
St. Anton am Arlberg and ever since 1954 Garmisch-Partenkirchen
is also amongst the places where this ski sports event with its long
standing tradition takes place.
And where you usually only see ski stars fight for every hundredth of
a second, hobby athletes can carve in the tracks of the myth: With two
options and a total of 1,800 altitude meters (nearly 6,000 ft) and 7
kilometers (more than 4 miles) of distance, the ‘Kandahar-circuit’
through Garmisch-Classic is an unforgettable experience. Thanks to
the Kandahar express’ halfway station, less ambitious winter athletes
can simply leave out the more spectacular and sometimes very
challenging parts of the World Championship run but still catch a
glimpse of the myth.
