Im Untergrund kämpfte er gegen die Briten für einen israelischen
Staat. Als Soldat und Journalist galt er nach 1948 als Volksheld,
bis er es wagte, an israelische Kriegsverbrechen zu erinnern.
Uri Avnery, der »letzte Mohikaner der radikalen Linken« kämpft
seit 50 Jahren für seine Idee von zwei Staaten für zwei Völker. Er
gründete seine eigene Zeitung, wurde zum Pionier bei der Aufdeckung
von Verbrechen und Korruption – und war einer der Erfinder
des Sensationsjournalismus. Als erster Autor in Israel verwendete
Avnery den Begriff »das palästinensische Volk«, als erster
Israeli traf er sich mit Arafat. Als persönlicher Gegner Ben Gurions
wurde er bald zum Staatsfeind Nr. 1 erklärt und war dennoch zehn
Jahre lang der »fleißigste Abgeordnete« in der Knesseth.
Hanadon: Uri Avnery ist das Portrait eines unverwüstlichen Friedenskämpfers
und zugleich eine Studie über eine gerade 50 Jahre
alte Gesellschaft. Der Mann, der drei schwere Attentate überlebte,
ist mittlerweile an den Rand des öffentlichen Bewusstseins
Israels gedrängt worden.
Journalist and peace activist Uri Avnery is a man who Israelis
have loved to hate for over 50 years. »The last Mohican of the radical
left«, Avnery has devoted his life to promoting the idea of two
states for two nations, and for this he has paid a price: the head of
the General Security Services proclaimed him Public Enemy number
1 and several attempts were made at his life. Despite his significant
contribution to shaping the State of Israel, Avnery lives on
the fringe of Israeli public opinion, and is a living example of the
saying one cannot be a prophet in ones own city.
Uri Avnery: Warrior for Peace deals with memory and oblivion
through the story of a complex and controversial man whose life
encompasses the spirit of a period and the history of a nation, one
of the last of a generation from whom ideology, political fervor and
belief that it is possible to change the world did not provoke contemptuous
post-modernist derision. The film combines interviews
with associates and archival footage to recount Avnerys life story,
while following Avnery and his wife Rachel during the dramatic
past two years, a period that has turned Avnerys dream into a
more remote possibility.
