‘Hydro’ building wins
renovation award
A building façade project for the
University of Sunderland has been
honoured as overall winner of the inaugural
UK Aluminium in Renovation
Awards. The project – Hydro contributed
to its success – will now be entered
in the European competition.
The façade project – the very first
application in the UK of Technal’s
structurally glazed curtain walling
system – helped revitalize a 1960s
campus building, turning it into a colourful
gateway to the University of
Sunderland.
New litho line
for Alcoa Bohai
BWG Bergwerk- und Walzwerk-
Maschinenbau GmbH in Duisburg,
Germany, received an order from Alcoa
for the turn key installation of a
new litho line. The new pure-stretch-
Levelflex, degreasing and trimming
Line will be set up at Alcoa Bohai
Aluminum Industries Company Ltd.
in Qinhuangdao, Hebei Province in
China. The line will incorporate the
latest technologies of leveling, cleaning
and trimming. BWG will supply
the complete equipment including
all mechanical and electrical components.
Dr.-Ing. Herwig Nielsen, der 36 Jahre für
die deutsche Aluminiumindustrie – davon
lange Jahre als Vorstandsmitglied der
Aluminium-Zentrale e. V. (ALZ) – tätig war,
ist im April dieses Jahres im Alter von 81
Jahren verstorben.
Herwig Nielsen wurde am 12. April
1926 in Frankfurt a. M. geboren. Er studierte
in Tübingen und Stuttgart Mathematik,
Physik und Metallkunde und wurde an
der Staatlichen Materialprüfungsanstalt
Stuttgart promoviert. 1955 trat er als wissenschaftlicher
Mitarbeiter und Assistent
des Technischen Geschäftsführers in die
ALZ ein, wurde Technischer Direktor und
im April 1977 Mitglied des Vorstandes. Er

Renovation
Awards will be announced
in November
in Paris. In addition to the UK’s renovation
award, the Sunderland project
won a special prize for Cladding and
Roofing.
Hindalco completes acquisition of Novelis
Hindalco Industries Ltd. has completed
its acquisition of Novelis Inc.
The transaction makes Hindalco the
world‘s largest aluminum rolled products
company and one of the largest
producers of primary aluminum in
Asia. Novelis will operate as a subsidiary
of Hindalco.
Hindalco entered into an agreement
with Novelis, dated 10 February
2007, to acquire the company in
an all-cash transaction which values
Novelis at approx. US$ 6.0 billion, including
debt. Under the terms of the
agreement, Novelis shareholders will
receive US$ 44.93 in cash for each
outstanding common share. Novelis
shareholders approved the transaction
at a special meeting in May. 99.8%
of the votes cast by shareholders were
in favour of the transaction.
“The combination of Hindalco
and Novelis establishes an integrated
producer with low-cost alumina and
aluminium facilities combined with
high-end rolling capabilities and a
global footprint,” said Kumar M. Birla,
Chairman of Hindalco. “The complementary
assets and expertise of the
team provides a strong platform for
growth and success.”
While Novelis is the global leader
in value-added, high-end aluminium
rolled products and aluminium can
recycling Hindalco is consistently
increasing its share of value-added
products, which today stand at nearly
60 per cent.
