Alcan’s expansion of
Isal smelter voted out
Alcan will carefully analyse the close
results of a public consultation in Hafnarfjordur
and assess how they might
affect the future of its Isal aluminium
smelter. Citizens of Hafnarfjordur
voted by a majority of 50.6% against
a local urbanisation plan that included
the expansion of the Isal smelter.
Employing approx. 450 people, the
Isal smelter currently produces about
180,000 tpy of aluminium. The proposed
expansion would use Alcan’s
AP35 technology, raising the total capacity
to 460,000 tpy. Start-up of the
expansion was planned for 2010 with
full production in early 2011.
Alutrint receives EMA approval
Trinidad & Tobago’s state-controlled
Alutrint aluminium smelter project
received a major boost from the
country’s Environmental Management
Authority (EMA) approval of
a certificate of environmental clearance
(CEC). The CEC approval does
not grant Alutrint permission to start
construction, but allows work to begin
on the project. During the process,
Alutrint was asked to present detailed
information to prove it conforms
with specific standards on air quality,
ground water monitoring and others.
Alutrint is a joint venture between the
Trinidad & Tobago government which
Yulian Power to take control
of Henan Zhongfu smelter
China’s Henan Yulian Power Group
intends to take control of Shanghai-listed
aluminium smelter Henan
Zhongfu Industry Co. Zhongfu will issue
up to 100m shares to Yulian worth
667 million yuan (US$86m), taking
its stake in the smelter from 29.9
to 51.3%. This will ensure Yulian’s
controlling share and supports the
Zhongfu smelter’s stable growth.
Zhongfu produced 182,000 tonnes of
primary aluminium in 2006. Zhongfu
and Yulian are based in Gongyi city in
central Henan province.
