Pharmaceutical products are »specialty products«. Since the
mid-50s research had been done on better packaging methods.
The result in 1956 was the development by the Uhlmann company
in Laupheim of the first universal strip packing machine
for heat-seal packaging. Further developments led to the
»Uhlmann KP 1« blister packaging machine that allowed Ullus
® capsules to be packaged in plastic and aluminum foil.
Close cooperation between pharmacist Helmut Vetter and
engineer Uhlmann led to the creation of a tropics-proof seal
ideal for the highly sensitive gelatine capsules. The installation
of a suction pump by Vetter technicians enabled continuous
checking of the blister strips and the removal of improperly
sealed packages, which otherwise would have made it into
market.
The universal applications of this machine made it possible
to work with other forms of drug administration including
tablets and suppositories that were sensitive to humidity.
The novel blister packaging attracted its first customer with
a worldwide market. A successful partnership was formed
with Uhlmann. The result: Soft-gelatine rectal capsules. To
retain the consistency of the capsule for effective application in
worldwide markets including the tropics, the capsules had to be
packaged airtight and free of humidity.
The technological advances and results regarding this application
transformed Vetter into a pioneer in air and humidityfree
packaging. More pharmaceutical companies approached
Vetter, leading it more and more towards contract manufacturing
with a pharmaceuticals focus, unlike the competition, who
also served the cosmetics and food industries.
