A robot was introduced on the aseptic production line for
prefilled syringes in 1992. This started an automation initiative
that led to a jump in productivity within three years and did a
great deal to motivate personnel.
In 1993, the Vetter Pharmacy, which had been in »Untere
Mang« since 1972, was renovated. New stairs, an elevator
and a security system were installed. The historically protected
façade was retouched but left intact. In keeping with the corporate
identity, the pharmacy’s showcase was painted using white
and turquoise. All these modifications resulted in a pharmacy
that is still seen today as a modern health center in a historical
building with a medieval façade.
1993 was the year of the »Seehofer Reform«, legislation imposed
on the pharmaceutical and medical industries by the German
Ministry of Health to cut medical costs. As a result, many
companies were put under financial pressure, including Vetter.
Companies were highly dependent on the local market at that
point rather than on international ones, and Vetter was forced
to decrease its workforce for only the second time in 10 years.
Currency turbulence on the international financial markets also
affected the pharmaceutical sector.
In 1996, in the wake of growing internationalization in the
pharmaceutical and biotech industries, the Vetter family decided
to participate financially in Gland Pharma Ltd., a leading
contract manufacturer involved in the sterile filling of drugs in
India. Besides its commitment to the Vetter Group, the family,
which is represented to this day on the Gland board of directors,
exhibited a keen sense of vision.
In the same year, Vetter Pharma-Fertigung also began
constructing a new administration building which opened for
business in February 1997. Administration, controlling, sales
and production planning moved into the building.
The first half of 1997 was marked by the retirement of
Helmut Vetter, 76, from his daily duties in the companies. He
