Shortly after the production facility for the Vetter Lyo-Ject ®
dual-chamber syringe was completed, there was a shift in the
market as is often the case. Cartridges were now in demand.
Cartridges are glass barrels containing either a drug solution or
a lyophilized drug and diluent. They are closed with a rubber
stopper and crimp cap. All cartridges are processed under aseptic
conditions since the drugs they contain do not allow sterilization
in the final container. Cartridges are used as drug containers
in injection pens or pumps for the single- or multi-dose
application of parenterals. The benefits of prefilled cartridges
in conjunction with the right applicator mean increased patient
compliance.
Indications for the use of prefilled cartridges are diabetes,
growth deficiency therapy, viral hepatitis, renal anemia and
thrombosis prophylaxis, among others. Increasingly, biotechnologically
derived peptides and prostaglandins are also
administered via pens or injection pumps.
As in the past, Vetter, was prepared for change: The pilot
facility was built with enough flexibility to switch production to
cartridges and a successful step into the market followed.
