Due to changing legal requirements regarding the integration
of packaging and drug manufacture and the new, highly
marketable birth control pill, Vetter’s step towards innovative
production with packaging proved to be one in the right direction.
The pharmaceutical industry also saw the implementation
of the GMP guidelines requiring, among other things,
skilled personnel in addition to technical preconditions for
the production and packaging of drugs. By the same token,
towards the middle of the 60s, a consolidation phase in the
pharmaceutical industry began, often with larger companies
buying up smaller ones, much as in today’s market. The goal
of these mergers was to reduce research time and financial
risk while producing successful products and increasing their
return on investment.
Contract manufacturing became an enticing business
prospect to finance and business managers as it decreased their
costs of production and financial risk. Taking the trends of the
time in stride, in 1965, Helmut Vetter decided to expand the
company’s contract sealing activities by resolutely performing
contract manufacturing services for pharmaceutical products
including the packaging of sterile injection sets. This step had
a number of internal consequences. For Vetter personnel, for
example, practice and theory came into conflict. The engineers
had to familiarize themselves with such »foreign« terms as
contamination and sterility. Slowly and with teamwork, the
challenges were overcome and success followed.
