The Bell Eock is situated about 12 miles from<br />
Montrose, and, as is well known, <strong>the</strong> lighthouse on<br />
<strong>the</strong> rock ranks as one <strong>of</strong> Stephenson's greatest<br />
achievements. The signal tower in connection with<br />
<strong>the</strong> above is situated in Ladyloan, Arbroath; it was<br />
erected in 1810, is about 80 feet in height, and is supplied<br />
with a very powerful telescope placed in <strong>the</strong><br />
signal room at <strong>the</strong> top <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tower. In connection<br />
with this tower <strong>the</strong>re are dwellings for <strong>the</strong> four lighthouse<br />
keepers and a boatman, who form <strong>the</strong> staff.<br />
Each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> keepers passes six weeks on <strong>the</strong> rock<br />
and two weeks on shore. Signals are given to <strong>the</strong><br />
persons at <strong>the</strong> lighthouse on <strong>the</strong> rock, by <strong>the</strong> lightkeeper<br />
on shore, daily, from nine to ten morning, and<br />
two to three afternoon, wea<strong>the</strong>r permitting. There<br />
is a boat belonging to <strong>the</strong> Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Lights Commissioners<br />
engaged in going to and fro once a fortnight,<br />
wea<strong>the</strong>r permitting, and at o<strong>the</strong>r times wtien signalled.<br />
A Pohce Court is held weekly, on Monday,<br />
a Justice <strong>of</strong> Peace Court on <strong>the</strong> first Monday <strong>of</strong> every<br />
month, and a Sheriff Small Debt Court on <strong>the</strong> third<br />
Wednesday in January, March, May, July, September,<br />
and November. The places <strong>of</strong> worship are very<br />
numerous, and some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m very handsome and<br />
commodious. There is a High School, several public<br />
board schools, and private boarding and day schools<br />
The market is held on Saturday, and <strong>the</strong> fairs on <strong>the</strong><br />
last Saturday in January, for general business and<br />
hiring servants; on <strong>the</strong> first Saturday after Whit<br />
Sunday for hiring ; July 18th (if it fall on a Satur<br />
day, if not, on <strong>the</strong> following Saturday), for general<br />
business and hiring; and <strong>the</strong> first Saturday after<br />
Martinmas for hiring.<br />
ST. VIO-EANS is a parish, and contains <strong>the</strong> small<br />
villages and hamlets <strong>of</strong> St. Vigeans, Marywell,<br />
