EDZELL,<br />
NAVAR, LOGHLEE & STRACATHRO, INCHBARE & TARFSIDE.<br />
EDZELL is a parish and village. The latter is<br />
situated on <strong>the</strong> banks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>North</strong> Esk, 6 miles N.<br />
from Brechin, .5 from Fettercakn, and 10 from<br />
Laurencekirk. The parish which is a large one is 14<br />
miles in length, forming <strong>the</strong> north-east part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
county. The Grampian Hills, running east and<br />
west, are in <strong>the</strong> immediate neighbourhood, and <strong>the</strong><br />
scenery around is <strong>of</strong> a very beautiful description.<br />
This part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> county being considered very healthy<br />
it is much resorted to by summer visitors. The chief<br />
object <strong>of</strong> interest is <strong>the</strong> ruins <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Castle <strong>of</strong> Edzell,<br />
which is considered one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> finest ruins in <strong>Scotland</strong>.<br />
The village consists <strong>of</strong> one main street with several<br />
smaller ones diverging <strong>the</strong>refrom, it is neat and well<br />
built, and is hghted with gas. There are two excellent<br />
hotels, and a branch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Union Bank <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong>.<br />
There is a Parish Church and also a Free<br />
Church in <strong>the</strong> village, and two public schools, one in<br />
Edzell and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r at Waterside. Fairs, <strong>the</strong> third<br />
Thursday in February, first Monday in May, fourth<br />
Friday in July, Fourth Wednesday in August, and in<br />
October, for cattle and sheep.<br />
LETHNOT and NAVAE is a joint parish seven<br />
miles north from Brechin and four-and-a-half west<br />
from Edzell, it is 5 miles broad and 15 miles long.<br />
The stream called <strong>the</strong> West Water runs through <strong>the</strong><br />
parish. The hills in <strong>the</strong> parish form part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Grampian range. There is a parish church and a<br />
pubhc school.<br />
LOCHLEE is a parish eighteen miles in length<br />
and about eight in breadth, situated among <strong>the</strong><br />
Grampian Hills, a mountainous and bleak district.<br />
It is 17 miles from Fettercairn, 22 from Lawrencekirk,<br />
18 from Brechin, and 12 from Edzell. The<br />
parish receives its name tln?ough <strong>the</strong> Loch which is<br />
so named, and some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> finest scenery in <strong>Scotland</strong><br />

Edzell, and contains <strong>the</strong> small village <strong>of</strong> Inchbare<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Caledonian Railway.<br />
