LARGO is a parish nearly four miles and a-half in<br />

length aad three in breadth. It is situated on <strong>the</strong><br />

shore <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Firth <strong>of</strong> Forth in <strong>the</strong> county <strong>of</strong> Fife, and<br />

is distant 11 miles from St. Andrew's, 9 from Cupar,<br />

5 from EUe, and 3 from Leven. The parish contains<br />

<strong>the</strong> villages <strong>of</strong> Upper and Ne<strong>the</strong>r Largo and Lundin<br />

Mill. The most striking feature in this district is Largo<br />

Law, a conical hill wliich is upwards <strong>of</strong> 900 feet<br />

above <strong>the</strong> level <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sea, from <strong>the</strong> top <strong>of</strong> which a<br />

splendid view can be obtained <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Frith <strong>of</strong> Forth,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Lothians and <strong>the</strong> surrounding country. In <strong>the</strong><br />

small village <strong>of</strong> Upper Largo stands <strong>the</strong> parish<br />

church an ancient edifice with a spke. The Leven<br />

and East <strong>of</strong> Fife Railway passes at a distance <strong>of</strong> one<br />

mile from <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong> IJpper Largo and through<br />

<strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong> Ne<strong>the</strong>r Largo, where <strong>the</strong>re is a station.<br />

There is a hospital here, founded in 1659, <strong>the</strong> present<br />

building being- in <strong>the</strong> Gotliic style, wliich is very<br />

handsome and was erected in 1832. There is large<br />

garden ground attached, it is supported by means <strong>of</strong><br />

an endowment by a Mr. John Wood, a native <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

place, and is solely for <strong>the</strong> benefit and support <strong>of</strong> 13<br />

poor persons and 6 scholars to be maintained and<br />

educated at <strong>the</strong> school at Newburn. Any man <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

name <strong>of</strong> Wood may get admission here, to whatever<br />

part <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong> he mayjbelong. The National Bank<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong> and a Savings' Bank are established here.<br />

Both Upper and Ne<strong>the</strong>r Largo attract a great number<br />

<strong>of</strong> visitors in <strong>the</strong> bathing season. There is a market<br />

held here every Thursday.<br />

NETHER LARGO is a fishing village, one mile<br />

from Upper Largo and has a good and safe bay<br />

where vessels may take shelter in stormy wea<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

There is an extensive herring net factory here which<br />

emijloys a considerable number <strong>of</strong> women. The proj)rietors<br />

residence, a very handsome villa, adjoins <strong>the</strong><br />

works.
