wa:l will also be erected along tlie back of the
Balaklava pier, 13 feet from the surface of the pier,
and 23 feet above high water mark, an addition of 1
feet, which will give much greater protection from
the waves. The extension will consist of a breakwater,
running from the present termination of
Balaklava pier in an east south-east direction to the
length of 680 feet, thence in a south south-east
direction for a further length of 180 feet, terminating
on the rock known as the Outer Bush. The new
breakwater will be 30 feet wide at the outer end, and
will completely protect the harbour entrances from
all points at which they are at present exposed, and
consequently faciUtate access and egress. The works
are estimated to cost ,£60,000, which sum the Pubhc
Works Commissioners have advanced on loan. The
Harbour Commissioners have fortunately secured the
services of John H. Bostock, Esq., c.b., as resident
engineer. The foundation stone was laid amidst
great demonstration of rejoicing on thfe 23rd of
October, 1875, by the Eight Honourable Lord
Saltoun, of Philorth House, superior hereditary
provost of the bm'gh, a nobleman who has taken a
kindly interest in the undertaking. Sir Alexander
Anderson, baron bailie of the biirgh, and the Harbour
Commissioners, of which he is the chau'man, have
been indefatigable in their exertions to obtain the
sanction of the imperial parliament to the undertaking
and the necessary means to carry it out, and are
deserving of the highest praise. There is a useful
patent slip in the harbour for vessels up to 400 tons
burthen, and a tolerable road for shipping in a bay
nearly three miles in length and upwards of one in
breadth. The places of worship consist of a Church
of the Establishment, a Free Church, a Scotch
Episcopal Chapel, and one each for United Presbyterians,
Congregationalists, and Baptists. There are
also several private and public schools in the parish
The markets, chiefly for corn, are held on Tuesday
and Friday, fairs on the second Wednesday in March,
second Thursday in June, and second Friday in
September (all old style).
