KIEKMICHAEL is an extensive parish in <strong>the</strong><br />
upper extremity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> county <strong>of</strong> Banff, it is about 25<br />
miles in length, varying from 3 to 6 in breadth, and<br />
extends from beyond <strong>the</strong> mountain <strong>of</strong> Cairngorm, to<br />
near <strong>the</strong> confluence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Levat with <strong>the</strong> Avon. The<br />
deer forest <strong>of</strong> Glenavon covers about 60,000 acres.<br />
Ben Machdhui is situated in this parish and is 4,296<br />
feet above <strong>the</strong> sea level. The Duke <strong>of</strong> Eichmond and<br />
<strong>the</strong> Earl <strong>of</strong> Seafield are heritors. Tomintoul is a<br />
village in <strong>the</strong> above parish and was formed a quoad<br />
sacra parish in 1853.<br />
