THOENTON,<br />
MAEKINCH is a parish 51 miles in length and 2<br />
miles in breadth, and is bounded by <strong>the</strong> parishes <strong>of</strong><br />
Kennoway, Scoonie, and Wemyss on <strong>the</strong> east, Dysart<br />
on <strong>the</strong> south, Kinglassie, Leslie, and Falkland on <strong>the</strong><br />
west, and Kennoway on <strong>the</strong> north. A small section,<br />
containing <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong> Innerleven (or Dubbieside,<br />
at <strong>the</strong> mouth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Leven), is cut<strong>of</strong>f from <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> parish by that <strong>of</strong> Wemyss. The Edinburgh,<br />
Perth, and Dundee Eailway have a station in <strong>the</strong><br />
village, and <strong>the</strong>re is also a branch line which<br />
connects tliis place with Leslie. Flax spinning and<br />
<strong>the</strong> manufacture <strong>of</strong> linen and woollen is carried on<br />
extensively. There are also corn and paper miUs,<br />
and in <strong>the</strong> village is a branch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Commercial<br />
Bank <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong>. There is a church <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Estabhshment<br />
here, also a Free church, and one for "United<br />
Presbyterians. A new pubHc school is now (1876) in<br />
course <strong>of</strong> erection, Thornton, Windygates, Coal-<br />
town <strong>of</strong> Balgonie, and Milton <strong>of</strong> Balgonie are village<br />
in this pa,rish. Close to Windygates is Cameron<br />
Bridge, a station on <strong>the</strong> Leven and East <strong>of</strong> Fife<br />
Eailway.<br />
KENNOWAY parish, which contains <strong>the</strong> villages<br />
<strong>of</strong> Kennoway, Baintown, Bonnybank, and Star, is<br />
situated on an acclivity which rises from soiith to<br />
north, and commands a beaixtiful prospect <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Frith <strong>of</strong> Forth and <strong>the</strong> Lothians on <strong>the</strong> south side,<br />
<strong>the</strong> view extending on <strong>the</strong> north side over <strong>the</strong> gi-eater<br />
part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>counties</strong> <strong>of</strong> Fife, Angus, and Perth; also<br />
<strong>the</strong> Grampian hills. The cliief occupa-tion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
inhabitants is agriculture. There is a church <strong>of</strong> ohe<br />
Estabhshment, a Free church, and a chapel for United<br />
Presbyterians in <strong>the</strong> parish ; also two p:.iblic schools.<br />
THOENTON is a village situated at <strong>the</strong> south-east<br />
extremity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> parish <strong>of</strong> Markinch, and is a station<br />
on <strong>the</strong> Edinburgh, Perth, and Dundee section <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>
