BERVIE,<br />

AEBUTHNOTT, GOUEDON, KINNEFF AND CATTEELINE.<br />

BEEVIE or INVEEBEEVIE is a parish and town<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same name; <strong>the</strong> latter is a royal burgh, a<br />

station on <strong>the</strong> Bervie and Montrose Eailway Co.'s<br />

hne, and <strong>the</strong> j)rincipal town for some miles round.<br />

It is situated 6^ miles from Fordoun, 10 from<br />

Laiu-encekirk, 13 from Montrose, 10 from Stonehaven,<br />

25 from Aberdeen, 1 from Gourdon, and 4 from<br />

Johnshaven. The town is composed <strong>of</strong> one main<br />

!street and several o<strong>the</strong>rs branching <strong>the</strong>refrom, and<br />

'Contains some good buildings, <strong>the</strong> principal <strong>of</strong> which<br />

are <strong>the</strong> parish church, banks, and public hall. The<br />

iDanking interest is represented by branches <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Aberdeen Town and County Bank, <strong>North</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong><br />

Banking Co., National Secui-ities Savings' Bank, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> Post Office Savings' Bank. The Public Hall is a<br />

handsome building, which has recently been built by<br />

public subscriptions ; <strong>the</strong>re is also a Town Hall and<br />

Oddfellows' Hall, all <strong>of</strong> which are let out for public<br />

meetings, amusements, &c. The places <strong>of</strong> worship<br />

are a Church <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Estabhshment and a Free Church;<br />

<strong>the</strong> former is a very handsome building, in <strong>the</strong> Gothic<br />

style <strong>of</strong> architecture, and is situated in <strong>the</strong> centre <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> town. There are two schools here, one <strong>of</strong> which<br />

is under <strong>the</strong> management <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> School Board ; <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r, a female school, is named after <strong>the</strong> late Mr.<br />

John Gordon, through whose liberahty it was chiefly<br />

erected. Bervie was constituted a royal burgh by<br />

charter, from King David II. James VI. renewed <strong>the</strong><br />

charter, confirming all <strong>the</strong> privileges and immunities<br />

granted by David. The burgh is governed by a<br />

provost, three baihes, a dean <strong>of</strong> guild, a treasurer,<br />

Arbroath, Brechin, and Forfar in returning one<br />

member to i^arhament. The sheriff's small debt<br />

court is held at Bervie on <strong>the</strong> third Monday in<br />

January, April, July, and October. The town is<br />

lighted with gas. The spinning <strong>of</strong> flax and tow is<br />

carried on here to a considerable extent, and affords<br />

employment to a large number <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> inhabitants,<br />

<strong>the</strong>re being five firms engaged in that business. The<br />

manufacture <strong>of</strong> woollen goods is also carried on here<br />

by one firm ; <strong>the</strong>re are also two firms engaged in <strong>the</strong><br />

manufacture <strong>of</strong> winceys and sacking. In addition to<br />

<strong>the</strong> above, <strong>the</strong> firm <strong>of</strong> W. & S. Munro carry on <strong>the</strong><br />

business <strong>of</strong> manufacturing chemists. The weekly<br />

market is held on Wednesday, and fairs on <strong>the</strong><br />

Thursday before <strong>the</strong> 19th <strong>of</strong> May and September.<br />

GOUEDON is a thriving fishing village in <strong>the</strong><br />

parish <strong>of</strong> Bervie and a station on <strong>the</strong> Bervie and<br />

Montrose Eailway. It is situated one mile from<br />

Bervie, which is its post town, and three from Johnshaven.<br />

AEBUTHNOTT is a parish bounded by Bervie and<br />

Kinneff. There is no village in <strong>the</strong> parish. There is<br />

a Ch-urch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Estabhshment and a board school.<br />

KINNEFF-WITH-CATTEELINE is a parish on<br />

<strong>the</strong> sea coast, bounded on <strong>the</strong> west by Arbuthnott and<br />

<strong>the</strong> south by Bervie. The inhabitants are cliiefly<br />

employed in fishing. The places <strong>of</strong> worship are a<br />

Church <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Establishment and a Free Church;<br />

<strong>the</strong>re are also two board schools and an Episcopolian<br />

school iu this parish.
