AUCHINDOIE, KEAEN, LUMSDEN, CABEACH, CLATT, AND KENNETHMONT.<br />

EHTNIE (united with Essie) is a very extensive<br />

parish comprising an area <strong>of</strong> 12,883 acres, situated in<br />

<strong>the</strong> district <strong>of</strong> Strathbogie. The village <strong>of</strong> Ehynie,<br />

about 38 miles from Aberdeen, 5i from Gartly<br />

Station on <strong>the</strong> Great <strong>North</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong> Eailway, and<br />

10 from Huntly, contains several merchants' establishments,<br />

two banking establishments, two inns, and<br />

enjoys a considerable local trade. It is much frequented<br />

during <strong>the</strong> shooting season, <strong>the</strong> extensive<br />

tract <strong>of</strong> hilly country adjacent, abounding with game.<br />

Agricultural operations are carried on with much<br />

success on <strong>the</strong> lands adjacent to <strong>the</strong> river Bogie<br />

which flows through <strong>the</strong> parish. In <strong>the</strong> neighbourhood<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hills <strong>the</strong> soil is light and gravelly, but<br />

productive to a certain extent. The principal eminence<br />

in <strong>the</strong> neighbourhood is <strong>the</strong> " Tap <strong>of</strong> Noth,"<br />

which rises 1,832 feet above <strong>the</strong> level <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sea. On<br />

<strong>the</strong> top <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hill is a vitrified fort. In <strong>the</strong> parish<br />

is a woollen mill and sevei"al saw mills, <strong>the</strong> various<br />

streams affording an unlimited supply <strong>of</strong> water power.<br />

A conveyance from <strong>the</strong> Gartly Station passes through<br />

<strong>the</strong> village daily en route to Lumsden and Strathdon.<br />

Markets are held on <strong>the</strong> first Wednesday in June,<br />

<strong>the</strong> day after Keith in Septembei-, and <strong>the</strong> day after<br />

Kennethmont in October. Feeing markets are held<br />

on <strong>the</strong> Mondays before <strong>the</strong> 26th <strong>of</strong> May and <strong>the</strong> 22nd<br />

<strong>of</strong> November ; also cattle markets during <strong>the</strong> winter<br />

are held on <strong>the</strong> Saturday following <strong>the</strong> foui'th Monday<br />

in each month.<br />

AUCHINDOIE (united with Keam) is a parish<br />

15,324 acres in extent. The village <strong>of</strong> Lumsden is<br />

in this parish, and is situated about 34 miles from<br />

Aberdeen and 5 from Ehynie on <strong>the</strong> high road from<br />

Huntly and Gartly to <strong>the</strong> Strathdon district. A<br />

branch bank and several good retail establishments<br />

are located in <strong>the</strong> village. Lumsden is <strong>the</strong> polhng<br />

place for <strong>the</strong> 6th West Aberdeenshire District at <strong>the</strong><br />

election <strong>of</strong> a member to <strong>the</strong> Imperial Parliament.<br />

Fairs are held on <strong>the</strong> last Tuesday in April, last<br />

Friday in May, and third Tuesday in August (o.s.).<br />

CABEACH is a mountainous parish about 47 miles<br />

from Aberdeen partly in Banffshire and partly in<br />

Aberdeenshire. Game is abundant throughout <strong>the</strong><br />

district.<br />

CLATT is a parish in Aberdeenshire comprising an<br />

area <strong>of</strong> 5,720 acres. The village is situated 10 miles<br />

S.S.E. from Huntly and 33 W.N.W. from Aberdeen,<br />

and about 2 J from <strong>the</strong> railway station at Kennethmont.<br />

A fair is held on <strong>the</strong> third Wednesday in<br />

November.<br />

KENNETHMONT is a parish 8,471 acres in extent<br />

principally agricultural. The station on <strong>the</strong> Great<br />

<strong>North</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong> Eailway is situated 32^ miles from<br />

Aberdeen and 8 from Huntly. The parish is watered<br />

by several small streams, and <strong>the</strong> general soil is<br />

fruitful.<br />

Post Office, Ehynie, James Eoger, postmaster.<br />

Letters arrive from all parts (except Strathdon) at<br />

11.35 a.m. and are despatched at 8 a.m. and<br />

6 p.m. Letters arrive from Strathdon at 11 a.m. and<br />

are despatched at 8.30 a.m. Money Order Office, Telegraph<br />

and Savings' Bank.<br />

Post Office, Kennethmont, John Morrison, postmaster.—Letters<br />

arrive at 9.5 a.m. and 1 noon (extra<br />

mail on Satm-day at 7 p.m.), and are despatched at<br />

6.30 a.m. and 1.30 p.m. Money Order and Savings'<br />

Bank. Telegraph Office at <strong>the</strong> Eailway Station.<br />

Post Offices, Cabrach, James M'Combie, Cr<strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong>ad<br />

(postmaster for lower or Banffshire district). Box<br />

closes for despatch, 10 a.m. ; and arrival, 4.20 p.m.<br />

on week days, by messenger from Glass. Miss Macpherson,<br />

postmistress for upper or Aberdeenshire district.—Messenger<br />

to and from Ehynie three times a<br />

week—Monday, Wednesday, and Satm-day. Arrival<br />

on <strong>the</strong>se days, 2 p.m. ; and despatch 3 p.m. Letters<br />

for Lower Cabrach should be addressed via Huntly,<br />

and for Cabrach via Ehynie. No direct communication<br />

between <strong>the</strong> two parish post <strong>of</strong>fices.<br />
