Queensferry (or South Queensferry), in Linlitligowsliire,<br />

is well known to travellers, as a steamer passes<br />

to and from several times daily. There are large<br />

wliinstone quarries, employing a number <strong>of</strong> men.<br />

DALGETTY is a parish bounded on <strong>the</strong> east by<br />

Aberdour, on <strong>the</strong> west by luverkeithing, on <strong>the</strong> south<br />

by <strong>the</strong> river Forth, and on <strong>the</strong> north by Dunfermline :<br />

in length it is 5 miles, and in breadth S-j miles. St.<br />

Davids is a small port in this parish, about 1^ miles<br />

east from Inverkeithing. The advantage that this<br />

place affords for <strong>the</strong> shipment <strong>of</strong> coal, which is<br />

brought from <strong>the</strong> colliery at Fordell by a raili^ay line<br />

five miles in length, is very gTeat. Upwards <strong>of</strong> 500<br />

tons <strong>of</strong> coal can be sliipped daily. The pier, which is<br />

capable <strong>of</strong> receiving vessels <strong>of</strong> 500 tons to receive<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir cargoes, is <strong>the</strong> property <strong>of</strong> G. W. M. Hender<br />

son, Esq.<br />

CEOSSGATES is a village partly in <strong>the</strong> parish <strong>of</strong><br />

Dunfermhne and partly in that <strong>of</strong> Dalgetty, about a<br />

quarter <strong>of</strong> a mile from <strong>the</strong> station on <strong>the</strong> <strong>North</strong><br />

British Railway. The manufacturing <strong>of</strong> fire clay and<br />

terra cotta goods is extensively carried on here by<br />

Ord Adams, Esq., and affords employment to a<br />

number <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> inhabitants <strong>of</strong> this district. The<br />

places <strong>of</strong> worship are an Estabhshed Church and one<br />

for Presbyterians. There is also a board school.<br />

POEDELL is a village in Dalgetty parish, and<br />

about a mile S.E. <strong>of</strong> Crossgates. It is chiefly<br />

inhabited by miners, who are employed on <strong>the</strong> estate<br />

<strong>of</strong> G. W. M. Henderson, Esq.<br />
