ment is added, affords superior accommodation to<br />
families, tourists, or commercial travellers. A<br />
number <strong>of</strong> elegant villas are situated a little to <strong>the</strong><br />
east <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> town, and several handsome mansions are<br />
in <strong>the</strong> neighbourhood. There are also a number <strong>of</strong><br />
handsome houses and cottages on <strong>the</strong> Links, at <strong>the</strong><br />
south <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> town, where <strong>the</strong>re are some fine open<br />
downs, on which several golfing societies exercise in<br />
that healthy amusement, and annually play for gold<br />
and silver medals. In <strong>the</strong> summer time many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
inhabitants let <strong>the</strong>ir houses for <strong>the</strong> season, Leven<br />
being <strong>the</strong> resort <strong>of</strong> a number <strong>of</strong> respectable families<br />
from Edinburgh and <strong>the</strong> interior for <strong>the</strong> benefit <strong>of</strong><br />
sea bathing. A handsome stone bridge crosses <strong>the</strong><br />
Leven, connecting <strong>the</strong> town with <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong> Innerleven.<br />
SCOONIE.—The parish <strong>of</strong> Scoonie is bounded by<br />
<strong>the</strong> Firth <strong>of</strong> Eorth on <strong>the</strong> south, by Wemyss,<br />
Markinch, Kennoway, and Kettle on <strong>the</strong> west, by<br />
Ceres on <strong>the</strong> north, and by Largo on <strong>the</strong> east. Its<br />
length from north to south is 5 miles, and its greatest<br />
breadth 2i miles ; <strong>the</strong> surface rises inland from <strong>the</strong><br />
shore to an elevation <strong>of</strong> about 600 feet, and <strong>the</strong>re are<br />
several heights which command an extensive view <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Forth and <strong>the</strong> Lothians. The land generally is<br />
in a high state <strong>of</strong> cultivation. The minerals are<br />
ochre, coal, and ironstone. It contains <strong>the</strong> town <strong>of</strong><br />
Leven, which is a burgh and barony. The parish<br />
church stands close to <strong>the</strong> town ; a Free church, an<br />
United Presbyterian and Episcopal chapels are <strong>the</strong><br />
o<strong>the</strong>r places <strong>of</strong> worship. There are two public<br />
schools and an infant school. Fairs are held on <strong>the</strong><br />
second Wednesday in April, <strong>the</strong> Thursday (market)<br />
after first Wednesday in July, and <strong>the</strong> third Wednesday<br />
in October.<br />

4.15 p.m.; to <strong>the</strong> East <strong>of</strong> Fife at 8 a.m., 11.30 a.iii.,<br />
and 5.50 p.m. Money Order Office, Telegraph, and<br />
Savings' Bank.<br />
