MENMUIR,<br />

CAEESTON AND FEAEN,<br />

MENMUIE is a parish about five miles north-west<br />

from Brechin, and extends from north to south about<br />

six and a-half miles, and from east to west four and<br />

a-half miles. It is bounded on <strong>the</strong> north by Stricathro<br />

and Lethnot, on <strong>the</strong> south by Brechin and<br />

Careston, on <strong>the</strong> west by Fearn, and on <strong>the</strong> east<br />

by Brechin and Stricathro. The sou<strong>the</strong>rn part is<br />

flat, and forms <strong>the</strong> vale <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cruick water.<br />

CAEESTON is a small parish situated between<br />

Brechin and Tannadice, iour miles from <strong>the</strong> latter,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> same distance from <strong>the</strong> former place. It is<br />

bounded on <strong>the</strong> east by Brechin, on <strong>the</strong> west by Tannadice,<br />

on <strong>the</strong> north by Menmuir, and on <strong>the</strong> south<br />

by Aberlemno. Careston Castle is <strong>the</strong> only object <strong>of</strong><br />

interest in <strong>the</strong> parish, it is supposed to have been<br />

erected about <strong>the</strong> year 1400, and was formerly one <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> residences <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Earls <strong>of</strong> Crawford, but is now<br />

in <strong>the</strong> possession <strong>of</strong> John Adamson, Esq.<br />

FEAJEIN is a parish situated at <strong>the</strong> foot <strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Grampian hills, ten miles north-east from Forfar<br />

and seven miles west from Brechin. In form it is<br />

nearly elhptic, being bounded on <strong>the</strong> north by <strong>the</strong><br />

parish <strong>of</strong> Tannadice, and on <strong>the</strong> east by Menmuir<br />

and Careston. The Cruick water intersects <strong>the</strong><br />

parish, and near <strong>the</strong> Noran stand <strong>the</strong> ruins <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

once celebrated Vane Castle.<br />
