BUCKHAVEN AND METHIL<br />
EAST WEMYSS is a village in <strong>the</strong> parish <strong>of</strong><br />
Wemyss, situated on <strong>the</strong> Firth <strong>of</strong> Forth, and consisting<br />
<strong>of</strong> one long street ; it is four miles from Dysart<br />
and five from Kirkcaldy. The manufacture <strong>of</strong> hnen<br />
is <strong>the</strong> chief trade <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> village; <strong>the</strong>re is also a<br />
brewery and a malting house. There is an Established<br />
and a Free Church in <strong>the</strong> village; also a<br />
pubhc and a Free Church school.<br />
The village <strong>of</strong> WEST WEMYSS is about a mile<br />
west <strong>of</strong> East Wemyss, and is governed by two baihes,<br />
thirteen councillors, and a treasurer. Coal is wrought<br />
close to <strong>the</strong> harboiu'. The only objects <strong>of</strong> interest in<br />
<strong>the</strong> village ai-e Wemyss Castle, <strong>the</strong> seat <strong>of</strong> Eandolph<br />
Gordon Erskine Wemyss, Esq., situated on <strong>the</strong> brink<br />
<strong>of</strong> an eminence and surrounded on <strong>the</strong> land side by<br />
beautiful pleasure grounds and plantations ;<br />
and <strong>the</strong><br />
ancient castle <strong>of</strong> Macduff, now a ruin. This massive<br />
structure crowns <strong>the</strong> height above <strong>the</strong> shore, and<br />
commands a most extensive view seaward. A chapel<br />
<strong>of</strong> Ease is <strong>the</strong> only place <strong>of</strong> worsliip. The parish<br />
which is on <strong>the</strong> south coast <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> county, contains<br />
<strong>the</strong> villages <strong>of</strong> East and West Wemyss, Coaltown <strong>of</strong><br />
Wemyss, Buckhaven, Methil, Kirkland, and Methilhill.<br />
It is bounded on <strong>the</strong> south by <strong>the</strong> Firth <strong>of</strong><br />
Forth, on <strong>the</strong> west by Dysart, on <strong>the</strong> north by Markinch,<br />
and by Scoonie on <strong>the</strong> east. It is 6 miles in<br />
length from east to west, and li miles broad.<br />
BUCKHAYEN is a village in <strong>the</strong> parish <strong>of</strong> Wemyss,<br />
and distant one mile east <strong>the</strong>refrom. Flax spinning<br />
and rope and twine manufacturing are extensively<br />
ctvrried on here, and find employment for a number<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> inhabitants. The village is noted for its brisk<br />
pursuit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fishing trade, and possesses a good<br />
harbour for <strong>the</strong> accommodation <strong>of</strong> boats engaged<br />
<strong>the</strong>rein. There is a Free Church and two public<br />
schools.<br />
The village <strong>of</strong> Metliil, with <strong>the</strong> neighbom-ing<br />
villages <strong>of</strong> Methil-hill, Kirkland, Inverleven, and<br />
Buckhaven, were formed into a parish in March 1875.<br />
The principal trade <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> village consists <strong>of</strong> fishing,<br />
coal mining, rope spinning, and salt manufacturing.<br />
There is a Chm-ch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Estabhshment in <strong>the</strong> village.<br />
