NEW DEER is an extensive agricultural parish in<br />
<strong>the</strong> centre <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Buchan district, extending 14 miles<br />
in leng-th and about 7 in breadth. At Maud, about<br />
three miles from <strong>the</strong> village, is a railway station, on<br />
<strong>the</strong> Portmartine and Buchan section <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Great<br />
<strong>North</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong> Eailway. This station is situated<br />
13 miles from Peterhead, 16 from Fraserburgh, and<br />
31 from Aberdeen, and is <strong>the</strong> telegraph station for<br />
<strong>the</strong> district. The parish is intersected by <strong>the</strong> river<br />
Ugie, which encircles <strong>the</strong> park and grounds <strong>of</strong><br />
Brucklay Castle. The castle, erected in 1540,<br />
occupies a romantic situation, and is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
principal attractions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> neighbourhood. Fairs<br />
for horses, cattle, and sheep are held at stated times,<br />
3.nd are well attended. In <strong>the</strong> village are variovis<br />
retail establishments, doing a considerable trade<br />
with <strong>the</strong> surrounding prosperous agricultm^al district.<br />
OLD DEEE is an extensive agricultural parish in<br />
Buchan, containing an area <strong>of</strong> 27.439 acres, a portion<br />
<strong>of</strong> which, 2,812 acres, forms a detached portion <strong>of</strong><br />
Banffshire, which includes <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong> Fetterangus.<br />
The village <strong>of</strong> Old Deer is situated about 10^ miles<br />
west from Peterhead, 26 north from Aberdeen, and<br />
one mile from <strong>the</strong> Mintlaw station <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Great <strong>North</strong><br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong> Eailway. The river Ugie intersects <strong>the</strong><br />
parish, along <strong>the</strong> banks <strong>of</strong> which are several mUls.<br />
The Abbey <strong>of</strong> Deer is about a mile from <strong>the</strong> village<br />
tliis place was built in <strong>the</strong> 13th century, and is now<br />
mostly in ruins. The Druids' temple at Biffie is an<br />
object <strong>of</strong> great attraction to <strong>the</strong> antiquarian and<br />
traveller. The mansion, woods, and beautiful ground^<br />
