BANFF is a royal bm-gh and a parish, distant<br />
about 155 miles N. by E. from Edinburgh, 80 east from<br />
Inverness, 46 N. by W. from Aberdeen, 35 from<br />
Elgin, 25 from Fochabers, 13 from CuUen, 18 from<br />
Keith, 8 from Portsoy, and 1 from Macduff, pleasantly<br />
situated on <strong>the</strong> west bank <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Deveron. The<br />
burgh is governed by a provost, three bailies,<br />
treasurer, dean <strong>of</strong> guild, three councillors, town clerk,<br />
and town chamberlain, and with Macduff, CuUen,<br />
Elgin, Inverurie, Kintore, and Peterhead returns one<br />
member to parHamentj <strong>the</strong> present representative is<br />
M. E. Grant Duff, Esq. Ordinary and small debt courts<br />
are held in <strong>the</strong> Court Eoom, County Buildings, once<br />
a week, and poUce courts are held in <strong>the</strong> Town House<br />
when necessary. The town comprises several good<br />
streets, which are clean, and contain many fine<br />

addition to <strong>the</strong>se <strong>the</strong>re is <strong>the</strong> museum, baths, literary<br />
institution, custom house, county prison, county<br />
asylum, Hfe boat, rocket apparatus, and coast guard<br />
station. Eailway communication is afforded by <strong>the</strong><br />
Great <strong>North</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong> Eailway Co., who have two<br />
stations near <strong>the</strong> town, one at <strong>the</strong> harbour <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
at Banff Bridge. 'Buses meet every train and ply<br />
to all parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> town and neighbourhood. The<br />
river Deveron is crossed by a bridge <strong>of</strong> seven arches,<br />
about half-way between Banff and Macduff. From<br />
<strong>the</strong> bridge a fine view is obtained <strong>of</strong> Duff House, <strong>the</strong><br />
seat <strong>of</strong> _ <strong>the</strong> Earl <strong>of</strong> Fife, surrounded by parks and<br />
plantations. The mansion is partly in <strong>the</strong> Corinthian<br />
and partly ia <strong>the</strong> composite style <strong>of</strong> architecture
