Is a parish and a royal burgh, situated on the
shore of the Firth of Forth, 2^- miles W. of Kinghorn,
3 E. from Aberdoui", and 8 from Edinburgh,
and is the terminus of the Edinbui-gh,
Perth, and Dundee Section of the North British Eailway.
The burgh is managed by twelve councillors,
including a provost, two baihes, a dean of guild, and
a treasurer ; and in connection with Dysart, Kirkcaldy,
and Kinghorn, returns one member to parliament.
The town consists of one long main street, from
which several smaller ones diverge, being all well
jpaved and gas lighted. The shipping of coal and
iron, heiTing curing, and coopering are th# principal
branches of trade. The parish of Burntisland was
anciently called Kingliorne Wester, and was originally
a burgh of regality under the Abbot of Dunfermline
it was purchased from him by James V. in 1541, and
erected into a roj^al burgh, was confirmed by James
VI. in 1587, and renewed by Charles I. in 1632.
Eossend Castle, which is the only building of
antiquity worthy of notice in the burgh, was often
the resting place of Queen Mary on her jouimeys to
Falkland. From the excellent position of Burntisland
as a seaport tov/n, being secure from almost
every wind that blows, its excellent bathing ground,
and its contiguity to Edinburgh, it htis now
The links
become a fashionable siimmer residence. .
at the east end of the tov/n are much resorted to for
golfing and promenading. The harbour, which, is
allowed to be the best in the Frith, is very capacious,
the water being of gTeat depth ; it ha,s an excellent
di-y dock, and a lighthouse stands on the entrance to
the haven. The basin is said to have been formed by
Cromwell, whose dyke or wall, from the foot of
Eossend Castle to the island, is still extant. The
pier, with the right of ferry, is the j)roperty of the
railway company, who have a number of steamers
sta.tioned here, A substantial middle pier runs out
into the harbour, by which vessels of large tonnage
are accommoda, ted. The breakwater, extending seaward
over 500 feet, and the quay wall on the east
side, extending about 350 feet, and running parallel
with the breakwater, forms loading berths for large
vessels, there being 24 feet of water at high spring
tides, and 9 feet at the lowest ebb, spring tides. The
town possesses a large and elegant hall, which was
touilt at the expense of the late Joseph Yoimg, Esq.,
