CEATHIE, a parish 51 miles distant from<br />
Aberdeen, situated among tlie Grampian mountains,<br />
in <strong>the</strong> centre <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> district <strong>of</strong> Marr, is an extensive<br />
tract <strong>of</strong> mountainous country, formerly called <strong>the</strong><br />
Forest <strong>of</strong> Marr, situated at a considerable elevation<br />
above <strong>the</strong> level <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sea. Ballater, <strong>the</strong> terminus <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Deeside section <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Great Nortli <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong><br />
Eailway, <strong>the</strong> nearest railway station to <strong>the</strong> parish, is<br />
about nine miles from <strong>the</strong> small village and post<br />

BEAEMAE, BALMOEAL, AND CASTLETOWN.<br />
<strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> Crathie. ,<br />
BEAEMAR, formerly a separate parish, biit nowincorporated<br />
with that <strong>of</strong> Crathie, is situated about<br />
60 miles from Aberdeen. In this district a considerable<br />
portion <strong>of</strong> tlie ancient forest remains uncleared,<br />
and is largely stocked with deer. Owing to<br />
its liealthy and beautiful situation, Balmoral Castle in<br />
this parish, was selected by Her Majesty <strong>the</strong> Queen<br />
and <strong>the</strong> late lamented Prince Consort, as a place <strong>of</strong><br />
residence and retirement. Her Majesty spends a<br />
considerable portion <strong>of</strong> each year in this her favourite<br />
higliland home, to <strong>the</strong> great dehght <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> inhabitants,<br />
to whom Her Majesty has become endeared<br />
by many acts <strong>of</strong> kind condescension and interest she<br />
takes in <strong>the</strong>ir welfare. A very large number <strong>of</strong><br />
visitors are attracted during <strong>the</strong> summer season to<br />
this wild and romantic neighbourhood, especially<br />
during <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> Her Majesty's residence at <strong>the</strong><br />
Castle. A short distance from Bahnoral is Abergeldie<br />
Castle, <strong>the</strong> seat <strong>of</strong> H.E.H. <strong>the</strong> Prince <strong>of</strong> Wales, and<br />
several noblemen and gentlemen have seats or<br />
shooting boxes in <strong>the</strong> parisli.<br />
CASTLETOWN (Braemar) is a village on <strong>the</strong><br />
military-road from Blairgowrie to Fort George. The<br />
river Cluny passes through and divides <strong>the</strong> village,<br />
one side <strong>of</strong> tlie river being named Avichendyrne. At<br />
Lochnagar in this parish is Mr. John Begg's celebrated<br />
distillery <strong>of</strong> pure Highland whisky. The<br />
Lochnagar whisky, in addition to being under <strong>the</strong><br />
special patronage <strong>of</strong> royalty, is highly esteemed by<br />
connoisseurs. Lochnagarmountain rises to <strong>the</strong> height<br />

Brotachan in this neighbourhood, are fairly stocked<br />
with trout, salmon, and eels.<br />
