ABDIE, DUNBOG, FLISK, OLENBUENIE, GEANOE, AND LINDOEES.<br />

NEWBUEGH is a parish, burgh, and seaport,<br />

situated on <strong>the</strong> south bank <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Eiver Tay, and in<br />

<strong>the</strong> County <strong>of</strong> Fife, six miles from Auchtermuchty,<br />

11 from Perth, 15 from Dundee, 10 from Cupar, and<br />

is a station on <strong>the</strong> Edinbui-gh, Perth, and Dundee<br />

Lines <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>North</strong> British Eailway. It consists <strong>of</strong><br />

one long street, parallel with <strong>the</strong> Eiver Tay, and a<br />

few lanes leading to <strong>the</strong> shore and <strong>the</strong> railway<br />

station. The government <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> town is vested in a<br />

provost, bailies, and councillors. The manufacture<br />

<strong>of</strong> linen goods was at one time carried on very extensively.<br />

At present <strong>the</strong>re are five firms engaged<br />

in this branch (all hand loom), but not to any great<br />

extent, as at present <strong>the</strong> demand for <strong>the</strong> kind <strong>of</strong><br />

goods manufactured here is very limited. Considerable<br />

quantities '<strong>of</strong> timber, slate, grain, potatoes,<br />

coal, salt, artificial manures, pavement, &c., are imported<br />

and exported. At <strong>the</strong> harbour <strong>the</strong>re are four<br />

quays, all belonging to different proprietors. The<br />

dues are <strong>the</strong> same, viz., one penny per register ton<br />

on all veisels discharging, loading, or ballasting.<br />

The receiver also pays one penny per ton. Passenger<br />

steamers ply between Dundee and Perth, calling at<br />

Newburgh, about three times daily, from May to<br />

October. Newburgh is celebrated for its fruit,<br />

especially pears and plums. It is said <strong>the</strong> sale <strong>of</strong><br />

fruit in a good season realises several thousand<br />

pounds. The Town Hall stands near <strong>the</strong> centre <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> town, and has a tower containing a clock. There<br />

are two banking establishments, <strong>the</strong> Bank <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong><br />

and <strong>the</strong> Commercial Bank <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong>, also a<br />

Savings' Bank in connection with <strong>the</strong> latter, and <strong>the</strong><br />

Post Office Savings' Bank. There is a Public<br />

Library containing about 2,000 volumes, and a<br />

Church Library. The places <strong>of</strong> worship comprise a<br />

Church <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> EstabUshment, a Free Church, a<br />

United Presbyterian, The Evangelical TJnion„and a<br />

Baptist Church. There is an excellent Board School<br />

at <strong>the</strong> east end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> town. Fairs are held on <strong>the</strong><br />

third Friday in June, and on <strong>the</strong> first Tuesday in<br />

December for hiring servants.<br />

ABDIE parish adjoins Newburgh, commencing<br />

about half a mile from <strong>the</strong> town, and extends several<br />

miles, and contains <strong>the</strong> small villages <strong>of</strong> Glenburnie,<br />

Grange, and Lindores ; here is <strong>the</strong> Loch <strong>of</strong> Lindores.<br />

DUNBOG is a parish situated four miles from<br />

Newburgh, and six miles from Cupar, bounded by<br />

<strong>the</strong> Tay, Monimail, and <strong>the</strong> parishes <strong>of</strong> Flisk and<br />

Abdie. It contains a Parish Chui'ch and a Board<br />

School.<br />

FLISK is a parish six miles east from Newburgh,<br />

and eight miles from Cupar. It is bounded by <strong>the</strong><br />

Tay, and <strong>the</strong> parishes <strong>of</strong> Creich, Abdie, Balmerino,<br />

and Dunbog. The parish is very small, consisting<br />

chiefly <strong>of</strong> farms. There is a church and a Board<br />

School.<br />
