GLBNPROSEN, KINGOLBEUM, LINTEATHEN, PADONAEUM, PITMUDIE,<br />

AND WOODEKD.<br />

KIEEIEMUIE is a market town and parish, 18<br />

miles north from Dundee, 5i from Forfar, and 5<br />

north from Glamis, <strong>the</strong> parish is divided into two districts,<br />

separated by part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> parish <strong>of</strong> Kingoldrum,<br />

<strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn part is called Glenprosen. The parish<br />

is about 20 miles in length. The Countess <strong>of</strong> Home<br />

is superior <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> biu-gh. Mr. Duncan WOkie is<br />

baron bailie, and <strong>the</strong>re are twelve Commissioners <strong>of</strong><br />

Police. The town consists <strong>of</strong> several very irregular<br />

streets, but its appearance has much improved <strong>of</strong> late<br />

years. There is a branch line <strong>of</strong> railway from <strong>the</strong><br />

Scottish <strong>North</strong>-<strong>Eastern</strong> section <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Caledonian<br />

Eailway. A neat and commodious station is conveniently<br />

situated at <strong>the</strong> west end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> town. The<br />

staple trade is <strong>the</strong> manufacture <strong>of</strong> Hnen goods.<br />

There has lately been erected two large power loom<br />

factories, which add greatly to <strong>the</strong> industry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

town. There are also many factories for handloom<br />

weaving. A great portion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> inhabitants are<br />

engaged in this business. There are two tanneries<br />

in <strong>the</strong> town and stone quarries in <strong>the</strong> immediate<br />

vicinity. A good trade is done in timber, slate, coal,<br />

manures, grain, &c. There is a pohce court held<br />

when necessary, and a sheriff's court is held on <strong>the</strong><br />

third Monday in May, July, September, November,<br />

and January, for <strong>the</strong> recovery <strong>of</strong> small debts. The<br />

banking establishments are <strong>the</strong> British Linen Company,<br />

<strong>the</strong> City <strong>of</strong> Glasgow Bank, <strong>the</strong> National Bank<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong>, and <strong>the</strong> Union Bank <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong>. There<br />

are also several respectable hotels and a. temperance<br />

hotel. A local jsaper <strong>the</strong> Kirriemuir Observer, edited<br />

by Wilham B. Mills, is pubhshed once a month. The<br />

places <strong>of</strong> worship are an Estabhshed, two Free, two<br />

United Presbyterian, an Original Seceders', and an<br />

Episcopal Church. There is an academy, erected<br />

and endowed from a bequest made in 1829, by Mr.<br />

John Webster, writer and banker. There are also<br />

board schools and an Episcopal school. A httle to<br />

<strong>the</strong> east <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> town is <strong>the</strong> cemetery, situated on <strong>the</strong><br />

side <strong>of</strong> an eminence, <strong>the</strong> grounds <strong>of</strong> which are beautifully<br />

laid out. The market day is Friday. Hiring<br />

market, Friday, if term day, or first Friday after.<br />

Fairs are held first Monday in January, February,<br />

March, April, and May, first Wednesday<br />

after Glamis, which is first Wednesday<br />

after 20th May, July 24th if Wednesday, if not,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Wednesday after ; first Wednesday after <strong>the</strong><br />

18th <strong>of</strong> October, and first Wednesday after Glamis<br />

which is <strong>the</strong> first Wednesday after 22nd November.<br />

Glenprosen and Padonarum are in Kirriemuir parish,<br />

COETACHY and CLOVA, a joint parish about six<br />

miles from Kirriemuir, is about nineteen miles in<br />

length, but very narrow, bounded by <strong>the</strong> paiishes <strong>of</strong><br />

Lochlee, Crathie, Tannadice, Lethnot, and Kirriemuir.<br />

Within <strong>the</strong> parish <strong>of</strong> Cortachy is Cortachy Castle, <strong>the</strong><br />

seat <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Earl <strong>of</strong> Airhe. Dykehead is a small village<br />

in this parish.<br />

GLENISLA is a parish situated abouc 14 mUea<br />

from Kirriemuir on <strong>the</strong> borders <strong>of</strong> Perthshire, it contains<br />

an Established and a Free Church, a board<br />

school, and a general assembly school. Woodend<br />

and Folda are small villages in this parish.<br />

KINGOLDEUM a parish and village, about four<br />

nules distance from KiiTiemuir, is in length about six<br />

miles, and in breadth about three miles. It is<br />

bounded by <strong>the</strong> parishes <strong>of</strong> Ktrriemuu', Cortachy,<br />

Airhe, and Lintra<strong>the</strong>n. It contains an Established<br />

Church and a board school.<br />

LINTEATHEN is a parish about eight miles from<br />

Kirriemuir and is about twelve miles in length, bounded<br />

by Airhe, Glenisla, and Kingoldrum. Dundee<br />

derives a large portion <strong>of</strong> its water from Lintha<strong>the</strong>n.<br />

The celebrated rock <strong>of</strong> Lintra<strong>the</strong>n is near <strong>the</strong> parish<br />

church. Here is a good board school. Bridgend<br />

and Pitmudie are small villages in this parish.<br />

parts arrive at 6.50 and 9.30 a.m. Letters are also<br />

despatched to Forfar, Dundee, Glasgow, and Edinburgh<br />

at 7.15 a.m. and to all parts at 12.30 noon and<br />

5 p.m.<br />

Letters for Airlie, Cortachy and Clova, Kingoldrum,<br />

and Lintra<strong>the</strong>n, should be addressed near Kirriemuir.<br />
