MILNATHORT,<br />

ARNGASK, ORWELL, DAMHEAD, DUNCRIEVIE, DRUNZIE, AND NEWTON OF<br />

BALCANQUBAL.<br />

MILNATHORT is a large village in Orwell parish,<br />

situated two miles north from Kinross, and consists<br />

<strong>of</strong> two good streets and half a dozen smaller ones,<br />

•which are lighted with gas, <strong>the</strong> expense heing paid<br />

hy voluntary subscription. The affairs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> village<br />

are managed by a committee composed <strong>of</strong> inhabitants<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> village and parish. At <strong>the</strong> junction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

principal streets is <strong>the</strong> town hall (erected by subscription),<br />

a fine building, with square tower, spire, clock,<br />

and one bell; <strong>the</strong> latter rings daily at 5.30 a.m.,<br />

8 p.m., and 10 p.m. The interior <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hall consists<br />

chiefly <strong>of</strong> one large and l<strong>of</strong>ty room, lighted with six<br />

fine windows. This room is let for concerts, meetings,<br />

&c. The corn exchange is also held in it weekly, on<br />

Wednesday. The pohce <strong>of</strong>fice, which has two cells<br />

for prisoners and a house for <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficer, occupies <strong>the</strong><br />

rear <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> building. The principal business carried<br />

on in Milnathort is <strong>the</strong> spinning <strong>of</strong> woollen yarns and<br />

<strong>the</strong> manufacturing <strong>of</strong> woollen goods. There are also<br />

a hnen factory, a brewery, a large corn mill, and a<br />

branch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> City <strong>of</strong> Glasgow Bank. The churches<br />

comprise an Estabhshed, a Free, and an United<br />

Presbyterian. There is a fine board school ; also a<br />

very handsome school, with residence for <strong>the</strong> master<br />

adjoining, which was erected by James Brand, Esq.,<br />

in memory <strong>of</strong> his fa<strong>the</strong>r, who was a native <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

village. There is also a boarding and day school for<br />

young ladies. A weekly stock sale is held on Wednesday.<br />

Fairs, first Monday in May and July, second<br />

and last Monday in August, first Monday in November,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Monday before Christmas.<br />

ORWELL is an extensive parish, situated north <strong>of</strong><br />

Kinross, and contains <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong> Milnathort, <strong>the</strong><br />

railway stations <strong>of</strong> Milnathort and Mawcarse, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> ruins <strong>of</strong> Burleigh Castle.<br />

ARNGASK is a parish and small village, distant<br />

about 7 miles from Kinross, 5 from Milnathort, 5 from<br />

Strathmiglo, and 6^ from <strong>the</strong> Bridge <strong>of</strong> Earn. The<br />

parish is partly in <strong>the</strong> three <strong>counties</strong> <strong>of</strong> Fife, Perth,<br />

and Kinross. The burn or river Farg separates <strong>the</strong><br />

Perth portion from Fife and Kinross, and <strong>the</strong> Eden is<br />

<strong>the</strong> boundary between <strong>the</strong> two latter. The Parish<br />

Church is in Fifeshire, <strong>the</strong> Free Church in Kinross,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> board school in Perthshire. The parish, for<br />

registration purposes and under <strong>the</strong> Poor Law and<br />

Education Acts is considered as belonging to Fife-<br />

shire.<br />

DAMHEAD is <strong>the</strong> principal village in Arngask,<br />

parts, Edinburgh, South, and Ladybank at 7.25 p.m.<br />

Despatches to all parts at 6.25 a.m. ; to Kinross at<br />

8.25 a.m. and 6.40 p.m. ; to Kinross and <strong>the</strong> West at<br />

12.15 noon; to Edinburgh, South, and Ladybank at<br />

3.30 p.m. Damhead, Arngask, and Dunerievie<br />

villages are served (by messenger) from Milnathort.<br />
