bant, where it joins <strong>the</strong> main line for Edinburgh,<br />
Dundee, Perth, &c. The burgh is governed by a<br />
provost, three baihes, and nine councillors. A<br />
sheriff's small debt court is held about every three<br />
months. There are several good streets lighted with<br />
gas, by a gas company, whose works are in <strong>the</strong> town<br />
The Town Hall and <strong>the</strong> Victoria Hall comprise <strong>the</strong><br />
public buildings. The banking interest is represented<br />
by <strong>the</strong> Bank <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong>, Union Bank <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Scotland</strong>, a Savings' Bank, and <strong>the</strong> Post Office<br />
Savings' Bank. The Commercial and <strong>the</strong> Eoyal are<br />
<strong>the</strong> principal hotels. The manufacture <strong>of</strong> linen is<br />
<strong>the</strong> staple trade, four firms being engaged in it to a<br />
considerable extent. Malting is extensively carried<br />
on. The scale beam works <strong>of</strong> John White and Son<br />
employ a number <strong>of</strong> hands. Distilhng and brewing<br />
is carried on to some extent. There are also three<br />
saw mills. The town is nearly equally divided by a<br />
stream called <strong>the</strong> Burn or Loverspool, over which<br />
<strong>the</strong>re are a number <strong>of</strong> small bridges. The places <strong>of</strong><br />
worship comprise <strong>the</strong> Parish Chm'ch, situated near<br />
<strong>the</strong> centre <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> town, a Free Chm'ch, two tTnited<br />
Presbyterian Churches, and one for Baptists. There<br />
are two fine board schools, a school conducted on <strong>the</strong><br />
Madras principle, and an establishment for <strong>the</strong><br />
education <strong>of</strong> young ladies. Fairs are held on <strong>the</strong> first<br />
Monday in February, last Monday in April, July 2nd,<br />
first Monday in October and December.<br />
DITNSHALT is a small village in <strong>the</strong> parish <strong>of</strong><br />
Auchtermuchty, one mile <strong>the</strong>refrom, and two from<br />
Falkland. Here are gas works. Linen and farina<br />
manufacturing and brick making is carried on here.<br />
There is an Evangehcal Union Church and a Hall<br />
belonging to <strong>the</strong> Dunshalt Mutual Improvement<br />
Society.<br />

postmistress.—Arrivals from all parts at 8-40 a.m.<br />
and 6-45 p.m., and from Edinburgh and <strong>the</strong> South at<br />
12-14 noon ; despatches to all parts at 6-45 a.m. and<br />
4-15 p.m. Sunday despatch 6-0 a.m., and <strong>the</strong> arrival<br />
10-20 a.m., and are delivered to callers from 10-0 to<br />
11-0. a.m. Money Order Office, Savings' Bank, and<br />
Telegraph Office.<br />
