Dunnottar and Petteresso are situate about half a<br />
mile from <strong>the</strong> town : <strong>the</strong>re is also a Free, an United<br />
Presbyterian and an Episcopal Church. A new<br />
Episcopal Church is now (1877) in course <strong>of</strong> erection,<br />
<strong>the</strong> nave and aisles only being built at present, leaving<br />
tower, spire and chancel to be afterwards added.<br />
The portion at present in course <strong>of</strong> erection will cost<br />
upwards <strong>of</strong> ^3,500, and will seat over 400 persons.<br />
The foundation stone was laid by <strong>the</strong> late Right Eev.<br />
Bishop Forbes, on St. Mat<strong>the</strong>w's Day, 21st September,<br />
1875. This was <strong>the</strong> bishop's last episcopal act. He<br />
died on 8th October, 1875. The architectm-e is what<br />
is generally called <strong>the</strong> early transition style, a mixture<br />
<strong>of</strong> Norman and early Gothic. A Eoman Catholic<br />
Chapel is also being erected at <strong>the</strong> sole expense <strong>of</strong><br />
Mrs. W. Eickart-Hepburn. There are some fine<br />
board schools in <strong>the</strong> town and neighbourhood.<br />
The market day is Thursday. Fairs are held 25th<br />
May and 21st November ; if <strong>the</strong> above dates should<br />
happen on Sunday <strong>the</strong>y are held <strong>the</strong> Saturday before.<br />
Cattle and sheep fairs <strong>the</strong> Thursday before Candlemas,<br />
old style; Megray cattle market <strong>the</strong> third<br />
Thursday <strong>of</strong> June, old style ; cattle and sheep, <strong>the</strong><br />
Thursday before Lammas, old style ; second Megray<br />
market, second Thursday in October, for cattle and<br />
horses; cattle and sheep, <strong>the</strong> Thursday before<br />
Christmas, old style. Cattle sales are held in <strong>the</strong><br />
market square every alternate Thursday.<br />
DUNNOTTAE is a parish comprising <strong>the</strong> old town<br />
<strong>of</strong> Stonehaven. It is about 5 miles in length by 3^<br />
in breadth, and contains 7,783 acres <strong>of</strong> land for <strong>the</strong><br />
most part cultivated. In this parish are <strong>the</strong> ruins <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> celebrated Dunnottar Castle, which are situated<br />
on a rock 160 feet above <strong>the</strong> sea, about one mile from<br />
Stonehaven and occupy about 4 acres. They are<br />
a great attraction to visitors during <strong>the</strong> summer season.<br />
Crawton is a small fishing village in Dunnottar.<br />
PETTEEESSO is a very extensive parish extending<br />
about 10 miles in length and 5^ in breadth, and<br />
contains about 27,245 acres <strong>of</strong> land, about two-thirds<br />
<strong>of</strong> which is cultivated, <strong>the</strong> uncultivated portion is<br />
composed chiefly <strong>of</strong> bleak hills and barren land. All<br />
<strong>the</strong> following places pay rates to Petteresso parish :<br />
CowiB is a small fisliing village in Petteresso jparish,<br />
adjoining Stonehaven. Cockney was erected a<br />
quoad sacra parish in 1859, and was taken wholly<br />
from <strong>the</strong> parish <strong>of</strong> Petteresso. The church is about<br />
7 miles from Stonehaven, and about a mile from <strong>the</strong><br />
village <strong>of</strong> Skaterow. The parish is about 6 miles in<br />
length and 4 in breadth. Cairnhill is a small<br />
hamlet 51 miles from Stonehaven in Cookney quoad<br />
sacra parish. Mtjchalls is a station on <strong>the</strong> Scottish<br />
<strong>North</strong>-<strong>Eastern</strong> Eailway, about 4^ miles from Stone<br />
haven and 11 from Aberdeen. Pairs are held on <strong>the</strong><br />
first Tuesday in May for cattle and horses, Tuesday<br />
before second Wednesday in June, fu'st Tuesday in<br />
August, first Tuesday in October, old style, for cattle<br />
and horses. Newtonhill a hamlet and railway<br />
station is about 6 miles from Stonehaven and 9 from<br />
Aberdeen. Ne<strong>the</strong>elet is a small village about 6<br />
miles from Stonehaven and one from Cookney<br />
Skaterow is a small fishing village adjoining New.<br />
t^nhill. Steanathro is a small fishing village<br />
adjoining Muchalls. Eickaeton quoad sacra parish,<br />
taken wholly from Petteresso, is entirely agricultural<br />
