502 STONEHAVEN. [WOEBAlili'S Dunnottar and Petteresso are situate about half a mile from the town : there is also a Free, an United Presbyterian and an Episcopal Church. A new Episcopal Church is now (1877) in course of erection, the nave and aisles only being built at present, leaving tower, spire and chancel to be afterwards added. The portion at present in course of erection will cost upwards of ^3,500, and will seat over 400 persons. The foundation stone was laid by the late Right Eev. Bishop Forbes, on St. Matthew's Day, 21st September, 1875. This was the bishop's last episcopal act. He died on 8th October, 1875. The architectm-e is what is generally called the early transition style, a mixture of Norman and early Gothic. A Eoman Catholic Chapel is also being erected at the sole expense of Mrs. W. Eickart-Hepburn. There are some fine board schools in the town and neighbourhood. The market day is Thursday. Fairs are held 25th May and 21st November ; if the above dates should happen on Sunday they are held the Saturday before. Cattle and sheep fairs the Thursday before Candlemas, old style; Megray cattle market the third Thursday of June, old style ; cattle and sheep, the Thursday before Lammas, old style ; second Megray market, second Thursday in October, for cattle and horses; cattle and sheep, the Thursday before Christmas, old style. Cattle sales are held in the market square every alternate Thursday. DUNNOTTAE is a parish comprising the old town of Stonehaven. It is about 5 miles in length by 3^ in breadth, and contains 7,783 acres of land for the most part cultivated. In this parish are the ruins of the celebrated Dunnottar Castle, which are situated on a rock 160 feet above the sea, about one mile from Stonehaven and occupy about 4 acres. They are a great attraction to visitors during the summer season. Crawton is a small fishing village in Dunnottar. PETTEEESSO is a very extensive parish extending about 10 miles in length and 5^ in breadth, and contains about 27,245 acres of land, about two-thirds of which is cultivated, the uncultivated portion is composed chiefly of bleak hills and barren land. All the following places pay rates to Petteresso parish : CowiB is a small fisliing village in Petteresso jparish, adjoining Stonehaven. Cockney was erected a quoad sacra parish in 1859, and was taken wholly from the parish of Petteresso. The church is about 7 miles from Stonehaven, and about a mile from the village of Skaterow. The parish is about 6 miles in length and 4 in breadth. Cairnhill is a small hamlet 51 miles from Stonehaven in Cookney quoad sacra parish. Mtjchalls is a station on the Scottish North-Eastern Eailway, about 4^ miles from Stone haven and 11 from Aberdeen. Pairs are held on the first Tuesday in May for cattle and horses, Tuesday before second Wednesday in June, fu'st Tuesday in August, first Tuesday in October, old style, for cattle and horses. Newtonhill a hamlet and railway station is about 6 miles from Stonehaven and 9 from Aberdeen. Netheelet is a small village about 6 miles from Stonehaven and one from Cookney Skaterow is a small fishing village adjoining New. t^nhill. Steanathro is a small fishing village adjoining Muchalls.
