FORFAR,<br />

INVERAEITY, KINNETTLES AND RESCOBIE, CLOCKSBEIGGS, KINGSTON-BY-<br />

FOEFAE, LOANHEAD, KIRKTON, DOUGLASTOWN, AND NEIGHBOUEHOOD.<br />

FORFAR is a royal burgh and county town, 14<br />

miles from Dundee, 13 from Brechin, 5 from Glamis,<br />

15 ivom. Arbroath, and 5i from Kirriemuir on <strong>the</strong><br />

Scottish <strong>North</strong>-<strong>Eastern</strong> and <strong>the</strong> Dundee and Forfar<br />

Direct Railways. The railway station is comparatively<br />

new, having been built to replace <strong>the</strong> old one,<br />

which was situate a httle more central than <strong>the</strong> present<br />

one, but was small and inconvenient. New<br />

roads and streets have been formed in <strong>the</strong> vicinity <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> new station and are being rapidly built on, and<br />

adds very much to <strong>the</strong> appearance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> town. The<br />

burgh is governed by a provost, three baihes, and eleven<br />

councillors. The Town House situate about <strong>the</strong> centre<br />

<strong>of</strong> Forfar is used by <strong>the</strong> Police Commissioners and for<br />

county meetings. It contains also <strong>the</strong> Subscription<br />

Reading Room, which is supplied with all leading<br />

papers, periodicals, &c., also a Public Library which<br />

contains about 3,400 volumes. Underneath one portion<br />

<strong>of</strong> it is a small market house and <strong>of</strong>fice for <strong>the</strong><br />

Collector <strong>of</strong> Petty Customs. PoHce Courts are held<br />

in <strong>the</strong> Police Cowct Room, Chapel street, every Monday<br />

and at o<strong>the</strong>r times when necessary. Sheriff,<br />

Civil, and Criminal Courts, are held in <strong>the</strong> New<br />

Sheriff Court Buildings daily if required. A Sheriff<br />

Small Debt Court is held every Thursday during<br />

Session, as follows :—January 15th to March 15th<br />

April 4th to July 31st, and October 1st to December<br />

15th. Near <strong>the</strong> Town House are <strong>the</strong> New County<br />

Buildings in which are <strong>the</strong> Offices <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Town Clerk<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Town Chamberlain. The o<strong>the</strong>r Pubhc<br />

Buildings comprise <strong>the</strong> New Sheriff Court House,<br />

<strong>the</strong> County Prison, <strong>the</strong> Poorhouse, <strong>the</strong> Infirmary, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> Reid Hall. The latter was erected by Mr. Peter<br />

Reid, a local tradesman <strong>of</strong> Forfar. It is a handsome<br />

stone building and very smtable for large meetings,<br />

balls, parties, concerts, <strong>the</strong>atricals &c. The burgh<br />

unites with Montrose, Brechin, Bervie, and Arbroath<br />

in sending one member to Parliament. The present<br />

member is W. E. Baxter, Esq., <strong>of</strong> Kincaldi'um. The<br />

chief trade <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> town is <strong>the</strong> manufacture <strong>of</strong> linens,<br />

&c., <strong>the</strong>re being about doi^en power loom mills and factories<br />

engaged in this branch <strong>of</strong> manufacture. There<br />

are several bleach works, and tanning, brewing, and<br />

British Linen Co.'s Bank, National Security Savings'<br />

Bank, and <strong>the</strong> Post-<strong>of</strong>fice Savings' Bank. There are<br />

several good hotels and posting establishments in <strong>the</strong><br />

town. The parish chm-ch. High street, is a very fine<br />

edifice, with handsome tower and spire. There is<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r church <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> EstabHshment in St. James'<br />

road, two Free Churches, an Episcopal, a Congregational,<br />

a United Presbyterian, and a Baptist Church.<br />

The latter, built <strong>of</strong> concrete, was opened on Sunday^<br />

<strong>the</strong> 10th September, 1876. It will comfortably seat<br />

400. The cost, including site, will amount to about<br />

^1,700, a great portion <strong>of</strong> which was raised before<br />

<strong>the</strong> opening <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church. There are also some very<br />

fine board schools and several private boarding and<br />

day schools. The public cemetery occupies about<br />

nine acres on <strong>the</strong> south side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> town, and is very<br />

handsomely laid out. On a mound at <strong>the</strong> top <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

cemetery is a monument, erected by public subscription<br />

to <strong>the</strong> memory <strong>of</strong> Sir Robert Peel. On <strong>the</strong> west<br />

side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> town is a fine loch, nearly a mile in length<br />

by half a mile in breadth, abounding with pike, perch,<br />

and trout, and is much frequented by wild ducks, &c.<br />

The market is held on Saturday, and cattle markets<br />

are held every Wednesday during <strong>the</strong> winter season,<br />

from November to April, on <strong>the</strong> large open space in<br />

<strong>the</strong> east <strong>of</strong> High street. A fair is held on <strong>North</strong><br />

Moor for horses and cattle on <strong>the</strong> second Wednesday<br />

in each month from April to November. A fortnightly<br />

cattle market has been recently estabhshed<br />

and is held in <strong>the</strong> immediate vicinity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> railway<br />

station.<br />

INVERARITY is a parish four- miles from Forfar,<br />

its post town, bounded by Forfar, Monikie, Murroes,<br />

Guthrie, Dunnichen, Kinnettles, Tealing and Glamis,<br />

situated on <strong>the</strong> Forfar and Dundee turnpike road.<br />

It contains an Established Church and a board school.<br />

KINNETTLES is a parish about two miles in<br />

length and about <strong>the</strong> same in breadth, three miles<br />

east from Forfar, its post town, and two miles from<br />

Glamis, and contains a parish church and a fine<br />

boai'd school. Kirkton and Douglastown are small<br />

villages in <strong>the</strong> parish.<br />

EESCOBIE is a parish about three miles east from<br />

rope making is also carried on to some extent. There Forfar, its post town, situated between <strong>the</strong> hills <strong>of</strong><br />

is a good u'on foundry and several stone qiiarries are Turin and Dunnichen. It is bounded j by Forfar,<br />

worked in <strong>the</strong> immediate neighbourhood. The bank- Aberlemno, Guthrie, Kirton, and Dunnichen. There<br />
