BEECHIN is a market town and royal burgh,<br />
Bituated on <strong>the</strong> north bank <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> South Esk, 27 miles<br />
N.N.E. from Dundee, 25 S.S.W. from Stonehaven,<br />
70 N. from Ediaburgh, 8 W. by N. from Montrose,<br />
about 12 N.E . from Forfar, and is a station on a branch<br />
hne <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> north-eastern section <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Caledonian<br />
Eailway. The town consists <strong>of</strong> one main street, about<br />
a mile in length, with several smaller ones diverging.<br />
Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> streets about <strong>the</strong> cross are very steep.<br />
The borough joins with Forfar, Montrose, Arbroath,<br />
and Inverbervie in returning one member to parliament.<br />

Flax spinning and <strong>the</strong> manufacture <strong>of</strong> hnens is <strong>the</strong><br />
staple trade <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> district. There are two distilleries<br />
on a large scale and a paper mill, employing a large<br />
number <strong>of</strong> hands. A newspaper entitled <strong>the</strong> Brechin<br />
