good inns, at one <strong>of</strong> which conveyances are obtainable.<br />
The level portion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country adjacent to <strong>the</strong><br />
viUage is under cultivation, and a considerable<br />
amount <strong>of</strong> planting has <strong>of</strong> late years been done on<br />
<strong>the</strong> slopes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mils, which occupy a large portion<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> area <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> parishes. The Union Bank <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Scotland</strong> and <strong>the</strong> Aberdeen Town & County Bank<br />
have each branches here, and <strong>the</strong>re are also good<br />
retail estabhshiiients in <strong>the</strong> village. A Sheriff<br />
Small Debt Court is held four times a year for <strong>the</strong><br />
settlement <strong>of</strong> debts <strong>of</strong> .£12 or under. The Estabhshed<br />
Church, a neat building, forms a conspicuous<br />
object on approacliing <strong>the</strong> village from <strong>the</strong> south.<br />
The members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Free Church have also a place<br />
<strong>of</strong> worship here. A School Board has been formed,<br />
iinder whose superintendence <strong>the</strong> educational requirements<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> district are duly provided for.<br />
Faus are held on <strong>the</strong> Wednesday before <strong>the</strong> 5tli <strong>of</strong><br />
January, and on <strong>the</strong> 5th, if Wednesday, second<br />
Wednesday and last Wednesday in February, first<br />
Wednesday and Wednesday after <strong>the</strong> 26th in May,<br />
Friday after St. Sahs in June, on <strong>the</strong> Friday after<br />
&st Tuesday in August, Wednesda.y after Aboyne in<br />
October, Tuesday and Wednesday after 22nd, or on<br />
that day if a Tuesday in November, and on <strong>the</strong> Wednesday<br />
before <strong>the</strong> 5th in December.<br />
COULL is a parish in <strong>the</strong> district <strong>of</strong> Marr, <strong>the</strong> inhabitants<br />
<strong>of</strong> wliich are principally engaged in agricultural<br />
pursuits. The principal portion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
parish is in an excellent state <strong>of</strong> cultivation, occupying<br />
a sheltered situation. The nearest railway<br />
station is at Aboyne, <strong>the</strong> adjoining parish on <strong>the</strong><br />
south.<br />

LEOCHEL-CUSHNIE (formerly <strong>the</strong> parishes <strong>of</strong><br />
Leochel and Cushnie, but now united), is 27 miles<br />
distant from Aberdeen. Craigievar, <strong>the</strong> seat <strong>of</strong> Sir<br />
Wm. Forbes, Bart., is in this parish. There are also<br />
<strong>the</strong> ruins <strong>of</strong> two ancient castles at Craigievar. The<br />
parish <strong>of</strong> Logie-Coldstone adjoins <strong>the</strong> above-named.<br />
